1981 Peterbilt with 3406b Cat motor
truck used to run fine and kind of still does.
I took the truck to Cat after several mom an pop shops could help me.
The issue is that the truck starts fine and make insane power with lots of good black smoke, but after about 10 mins or so the truck falls off and no longer makes power and no more good black smoke.
While the truck was at Cat they replaced a fuel return line and charged me 350 dollars. I was still on the road in another truck so I had them also do a clutch in the truck.
well 3 weeks later when I got back in town went to pick up the truck and it was still doing the exact same thing.
so Cat gladly took my $2300 for the clutch and the one return line.
The guy at the service desk at Cat hardly even looked away from his computer screen when I brought the truck back.
I posted on here once before and was told to check the air fuel ratio diaphragm.
also to check the fuel lines for internal delam. I have passed this all along to Cat.
Cat is showing zero care in my situation.
Since the truck has been at Cat I have paid nearly 700 on insurance while the truck has just been setting at the shop.
When I spoke to the Cat service manager he hardly even let me speak. The guy was not even at the shop but kept telling me that the 3406b injection pumps have a lot of moving parts and that that could cost $4000 to $8000
Very low class Meth type personality I got from the service manager.
Ultra arrogant towards me.
Does anyone have any input for me or advise?
I'm all ears.

check the transfer pump they are cantakerass one of the buttons might be bad,check the fuel pressure that will give a sign of a bad transfer pump.also the primer pump on top of the filter housing has a couple of buttons they have a tendesy to go bad too.

You won't find many Cat shops with anyone who knows anything about the mechanical engines and most will tell you, I've found several that didn't have the dials to time a mechanical or anyone who knows how to use them. I agree with superhauler but would also check the timing advance. You need to get you a parts book and shop manual for your particular serial #, and start tinkering around and as you get more experiance the more you can do. You should always include your serial#, and arrangement# in future post as it will help to diagnose problems easier. Is this an air to air or water jacketed engine? By the way what is your boost doing during this fall off period?

Puncher is right, even at a CAT dealer, not too many mechanics left that really know those engines! You are going to have to call around. The CAT dealer you are dealing with may be just too proud to say they can't really help you. I don't think they are giving you the run around. Honestly I think no one there knows how to diagnose your problem. You need to realize your engine is 30 years old! Be patient.

cannt offer eney good advice other than sence you're in dallas there is a shop just off loop 12 south of 30 named Jones diesel , its two brothers they've had the shop over 30 years and both them and there dad worked at Pete befor starting there own shop . cant find there number but i'll look again later

I agree, most dealers only train their techs on the lastest stuff, its not cost effective to train up on engines they may only see once a year. The guys that did know about them have mostly left the dealerships by now.
Having said that, the basics of engine diagnosis are still relivant, have they measured the boost pressure, fuel pressure and exhaust back pressure when the problem is occuring? does the black smoke clear up when the problem occurs? How old are the suction lines to the transfer pump, if they are original ones of them could be collapsing internally.
I dont know if ynot (Tony) is still around on the Diesel Garage but he is a guru on the mechanical Cats and works for himself so could probably help you out if you travel out his way. -
heck my experience is that there isnt a good cat dealer or shop anywhere if they cant plug a computer in to it they dont have a clue what to do. and are afraid to do anything with the epa breathing down their necks.Last edited: Aug 9, 2011

Problems like this could get pricey when you pay someone else to find the cause.

Thank you all sincerely. I am truly appreciative for the advise.
The Holt Cat shop still does not have any idea what I am even complaining about.
The truck makes good black smoke at start up. If you hit the accelerator this thing will blow Good black smoke, just like it did before the loss of power issue.
After taking the truck on the road and by the time you put it in 3rd gear No more black smoke. Power is gone. Truck used to run 80 with a full load.
Currently the truck will hardly go 50 with a empty trailer.
Has all new fleetgaurd fuel filters. Tanks look clean, has new air filters.
Fresh oil with the heavy duty Cat oil filter.
Motor does not leak a drop.
