Just started my first month with CRST and plan on my next move to be working for myself, 2 years is what I'm shooting for and figured I will start my home work now I dont want to do just local or just OTR, are there any trucks that would be good for both, my thought was maybe the peterbuilt 379, but I've looked at the prices and $$$$$$$$$$ if you know what I mean my other thought is to get a 1OTR truck and 1daycab 2 trucks lol
The 2 year plan

Make sure you develop a "realistic" business plan. Do search on the topics of "owner operators", "steps to becoming an O/O". You will find a wealth of info to help you to make a realistic business plan. May you be successful in reaching your goal.

Getting a truck that will work for both will be difficult. The specs can be completely different. Using a sleeper for local puts you at a disadvantage for the guys that can haul more, using a daycabs for otr is obviously a bad idea. The freight you haul will also make a difference. The problem with getting two trucks is the increase in overhead. A truck costs you money regardless of it it moves, ( moving it obviously costs more). Best thing to do will be to figure out how much it would cost for the trucks to sit for one day and see what that does to your CPM for the other truck. Does it drive your needed rate up so much that it is not reasonable or feasible? Also be sure to plan for the worst haveing to trucks means twice the bills in a sense.

Its good to dream, but I might suggest you learn trucking before buying multiple trucks.
Lots of things you can do to prepare yourself. Look at the fuel bill every time you fuel up. Every time the company truck you've been assigned to needs a repair. Look at that bill. Think about how you would handle it with whats in your checking account.
Begin to grasp the concept of $500 fuel bills every day or your life for owning just 1 little truck... -
