Stop at the Vince Lombardi rest area and go into either the gas station side or the inside book store and get 2 off the rack! Any truck stop or rest area anywhere close to or on the way to NYC from Carlisle PA in will have them! Cost about $3.99 or higher! Keep the receipts and put them on your taxes! They will wear out in about 6 months of good use but hey they are cheap and easy to use when they are folded to the section you need and sitting on your lap!

Im a rookie driver (about six months), four of which are being dedicated in the ny-nj-ct-pa area. Ive learned a few things about nyc.
#1. Timing is everything. Going thru the city from jersey (where i live) to ct or long island, do it before 6-630 am. If you have pickup/delivery in a boro, get there before 6. I run a daycab so i dont wanna kill my hours sitting in traffic and not get home.
#2. Let the taller guy go first. My first run across the bqe i saw the famous 12'2" sign and worried. I pull a flatbed but wasnt quite sure how tall my stacks were. I was behind a 13'6" reefer and when he kept going i followed him right under. (Ive since measured and my stacks are 11'8")
#3. Make the 4-wheelers back up. Ive had several tight turns and a 48' spread axle can be real fun, especially since the rear bags dont like to dump when its empty. Waiting for the room isnt always an option since most locals wont stop back and give you the room to turn. Once pulled out of a 4 way stop, block the intersection, pulled my parking brake till they moved. I figured it was better than ripping the telephone pole placed right on the corner down.
#4 Learn alternate routes. If coming from long island and the lie n bqe r jammed, go over the throngs neck to the cross bronx and the gwb. Using the tappen zee and nj17 if the cross bronx is jammed. Ect, ect.
#5. Learn when to turn OFF your cb. While it can provide you with useful info and a way to pass the time stuck in traffic talking to other drivers, it can also drive you nuts. Some guy have a #### fm radio station for a cb in the truck brocasting stupidness on 19 that reaches every cb in a 20 miles radius, others are the good old cb rambo who love getting you worked up and mad cause theyre waiting a shipper or stuck in traffic and bored.
Now, as i said im still a rookie and have tons more to learn. Yes nyc can be stressful at times but its no worse than you make it out to be.Dieselboss Thanks this. -
1) Are there any good, safe, legal places i can park in the bronx section? i only need to be parked for about 3-4 hours.
2) IF, let's say, you deliver to JFK. Can you list on the your logs, NYC, because technically it IS in NYC. Yes, you could say you are in jamaica, queens, but technically that IS NYC. i have had one company say i had to log it this way.
a) Let's say you deliver all around the 5 bouroughs doing multistops. Can you just go to line 4 on duty and flag it NYC? The regs seem to indicate that you can? -
Powell, im not sure since my bills would say jamica, ny and not queens or nyc. Id go by what the address on your bills is.

You have to list if your in another Bourrough from previous

What I have learned from all new york clearence sign's is If its a WHITE sign the clearence is correct.. and if the sign is yellow its a foot off.

Please discuss further and in greater detail.
Example: How about taking tappan Z to 9W south and then back to 95 if you want some adventure?Last edited: Aug 20, 2011

There are so many different ways around the city you can find different ways to beat/get stuck in traffic. If im not mistaken, i think 9w is now restricted to 10 tons except local deliveries. Probally too many driver were going on adventures. I never took it personally. Like i said im a rookie, and still have a lot to learn.dbny5000 Thanks this.
