Good choice.
Its a trade off if you are a company Driver.
Drive a fancy new truck and get lower pay, nothing when it sits in the shop, and be treated like a number, a low number.
Keep the truck safe and legal while banking that money and laugh at the guy in the shiny new truck counting change to buy a Hot dog for dinner.
Great company, Terrible equipment... Dont want to leave... What should I do?

I'm too lazy to read all 5 pages, so if this has already been said, I'm sorry.
Talk to your boss about selling those ragged company trucks and leasing a few trucks from either Penske or Ryder.
He'll get 3 new trucks, less mechanical problems, most likely better on fuel. Plus, each driver will have a nationwide 1-800 number to call in the event of a breakdown.
They handle all the PM's. Tires. Brakes. It's up to THEM to keep all the trucks in 100% DOT approved working order. This will benefit the company as well as the drivers.
If a truck isn't fixed, he'll have someone to yell at.... And, when a truck needs major maintence, he'll get a sub unit...
To be honest, I'm not impressed with the local Ryder shop that takes care of the company trucks I work for, but that's no reason to shoot down the entire company. -
BlackDucati, I have not driven a Ryder truck so I cannot speak for them. I have however driven Penske trucks for smaller companies. Me, my wife, the dog and all of our things in a truck that breaks down ounce a month and having to change into a loaner is not something I am willing to do again. At least not for the salary I receive now. If he went and got new trucks from them, I might go for it. When that truck breaks down and they do not have a loaner within 150 mile radius then your stuck. Does Penske pay anything because there truck broke down? NO. Do they pro rate the time your truck was down and deduct that from what you owe them at the end of the month? NO. It wouldnt fly with the Boss, I really do appreciate the suggestion and I might just bring it up when I get back to Texas just to see what he says.

I can tell you it is very hard at times but I am trying to just keep my eye on the prize because if I do things right I can be where I want to be in about another year and a half.
Just as an update for you guys I have been at home this past weekend and had some issues today. I was supposed to leave out today but that didn't happen. After starting the truck this morning she bogged down and died out. Check the fuel filter, no fuel in it. According to the fuel gauge I had a little over a half tank. Looked down in the tanks and it was so dark, even with a flashlight I couldn't tell. Thinking that maybe the fuel had run from one tank to the other seeing how it was sitting on a little bit of an incline. Me and my dad loaded up 2 50 Gallon Drums, went down to the Loves and filled them up. Brought it back, put it in the truck. Filled a 5 gallon jug to fill the fuel filter with. Tried to get it going and it would run great as long as I was standing there pouring fuel into the filter. I used up the first five gallons and went to pull some more out of the tank on the drivers side and it was black as coal. NOT GOOD! The fuel we put in there did not look like that at all. Somehow oil is getting into the fuel.
So, Me and my dad hooked a chain to the front bumper and pulled her 7 miles down the road with his twin stack Dodge Ram 2500 V8 Magnum 5 Speed manual (###### Truck) Towed it down to M&M Truck Repair in Fair Play, SC very good people, friends of my dads. They told use what needed to be done and an estimate on what it would cost. Need to drain it, blow out and clean all the lines, the tanks and everything else in that system. Called the boss and all he wanted done was the lines blown out to get it running instead of doing it the right way. That is exactly what they did and we'll see how long it lasts before she clogs up again. I am loading in the morning to head back to Texas so they can supposedly fix the problems we have with the truck. Will it get done? I don't think so but who cares... I get the same pay every week so here we go lol...

sub0 i really suggest that you do yurself a favor and at the next open Bear cave you pull into, even when they give you a green pull around back and beg the officer to give you a level 1 for your sake not putting you oss but just to get the boss to get off his duff and fix the darn truck. besides that it sounds like the DOT needs to do an unofficial visit no warning and do an audit. both logs and mech.

What a joke. And what terrible advice. If you don't like the truck you drive get another job. With your mentality you won't be around too long giving bad advice.
FWIW, I know Subzero is much wiser than this. I make this post in hope that some newbie will realize what a self-centered idea you have presented.

Im back in Arlington and will be here through the rest of the weekend. Bought my own truck and will getting it on Monday. I cant wait. Im really excited and at the same time rather nervous. This was something that I have always wanted to do and I have alot of other reasons for doing it. Another good point is it gets me out of the truck im driving now and with mine IT WILL BE FIXED THE RIGHT WAY when it needs to be, if you will. Im going to be starting another thread somewhere on here as a documentary or what not of my journey as a first time Owner Op. so be sure and check it out.
