Bill the head board weight on the trailer is already on the drives. If you put a load dead center of the trailer it should be dispersing equally between the drives and the tandems on the trailer. . i dont think you would really have an issue but thats up to you. like i said if your worried cut back on a few gallons of fuel and that will free up weight on the drives. know to be sure bobtail to scale weigh drives youll know exactly how much is left.
This is an example If your drives are 40,000 and the tractor is putting on 6000 you have 34,000 available. know have drives scaled with trailer. say trailer is putting on 6,000 more. you know have 28,000 on the drives left. with this example you would not be able to put 57,000 on the trailer because if the load is balanced on the trailer you be about 500 over on your drives. 57,000/2= 28,500

Hey Bill. You had purchased your tarps from MYTEE. Wondering which set you got? How much were they? And how are you making out with them?? I'm also switching to flats in Sept.
Thanks
Colin. -
That depends on where you locate the boxes. Plus undertrailer boxes tend to collect snow and ice more readily thus increasing your weight exponentially. Aluminum headache rack does not.
Removing a headboard is fine but you DO need protection against your load turning your truck into a pincushion. In some jurisdictions this can get you DOT'd big time. I've seen the results of load going through the cab several times, it is NOT pretty and seldom survivable. Gruesome way to die too. Happened once that I was one of the first on the scene of such. Picture a young driver with a steel rebar through the back of his neck and out his mouth, still twitching when I got there. Yeah, the load was chained to hell and gone but stuff moves. Even the cops and rescue got sick on that one. No headboard and no rack to slow the stuff down.
Seriously dude, if you're that worried about weight that you're looking at a few less gallons of fuel and disregarding your own safety, you have the wrong equipment for the job. Instead of wasting time and money on trying to make it work, dump the heavy trailer and get a lightweight aluminum deck or step.
DO get you a cab protector and install an air guage in your air ride system. Won't take long to know what pressure equals the axle weight you want.
DO NOT EVER put load weight before your safety.

Good points all. And in past life I've seen a couple of these accidents WITH bulkheads. Not sure they slow things that much. Long, skiny things seem to be the challenge to secure making sure you don't become a Kabob.
But, been thinking a lot about this (we all have a lot of time to think while putting some road behind us) and looked at ebay for some racks. I was thinking $1000+ on rack and but surprised to see some nice stuff for under $500. So all your input and pricing has me going with a headache rack. Harvest is approaching and won't be pulling the flatbed much in the next month or so. So will just keep watching and bidding looking for a "steal".
Thanks call.Kittyfoot and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
Thank you, I feel better about your future now.

You should never have to worry about your drive weight unless you load it wrong, which is almost impossible.

I was told not to worry about a headache rack its just extra weight you don't need... but after reading this my mind is changed also. Thank you.
Also, Bill, how did you may out with the MYTEE tarps? Are they holding up? Which ones did you get?
Thanks!! -
happy so far. I bought just about everything from them. They are busy so may have to call several times to reach them. But shipped when they said and arrived a day early.
I bought the standard red chain binders and wish I had spent the extra money on the yellow ones that the handles flip down on. But not a big deal. -
Which tarps I'd you get? Heavey duty 3 pc or light weight?
-
Heavy weight. when the people selling don't recommend them I decided to stay away.Elroythekid Thanks this.
