If that price includes a sleep study, the machine and the mask, that is one He)) of a good deal. If you are heavy you may want to consider the test even if they do not require it.

I can tell you that I personally have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I knew I had it, but had put off the test for a long time. Once I finally gave in, had the test, got the machine and started using it I sleep much better, (so does my wife). Also my blood pressure drooped noticeably. Now instead of hating the alarm clock, I usually wake on my own before it even goes off.

I know that there are those who will say that the whole sleep apnea thing is BS. I know that they will say that trucking companies who offer the testing are a conflict of interest. But I can tell you that it is NOT always BS. They may test some folks who do not need a machine. They may even test some that might not need the test. I don't know about that. It looks to me like they are trying to look out for their liability, and their drivers. But I can tell you that there is legitimate reasons for the testing. And if you have sleep apnea being diagnosed and threating the problem is a good thing. The price that the above driver paid was a really great deal. I don't see how you can blame the trucking company, that has arranged for their drivers to receive a service at a rate that far below market value. If you doubt me pick up the yellow pages call a sleep lab and ask them what their charge would be for someone, without insurance, who wanted to pay out of pocket. Then go on the internet and see what kind of price you can get on a CPAP machine, (remember you will want one that has a recording feature so that you can document your use). While you are pricing that remember to also price the mask and tubing, (in the sleep industry they can the mask an appliance). If any of the naysayers come up with all of that for less than $450.00, let me know. I will be impressed with your resourcefulness.

What's actually going on now for Stevens in regards to BMI and this Sleep Apnea test I have been reading about? What's the actual BMI cut off where they require it. I have heard 30, 35, and "above 39". Does anyone know which it is?

I wouldn't mind the test if they are willing to pay for it or finance it at a reasonable rate. But almost $2,000 out of pocket is a lot of money especially since I pretty much know I don't have sleep apnea already.

39 is the number. I dangle right at the edge of that number, but they haven't decided I'm needing to test.
You can get the test on your own much cheaper.
Or you can go thru Stevens and they will deduct it thru a payment plan.

I have sleep apnea and I am on the bi-pap machine and I can personally say that It has changed my life. I never did get enough sleep and I felt groggy all day. Now with the c-pap therepy I don't wake up groggy...unless I only get 3 hours of sleep. :)

So what does that number mean and/or reference? 39 lbs. over "ideal weight". I'm just trying to understand....I neither have sleep problems, nor am I over weight....just curious about this.

There is a numberical rating for the Body Mass Index (BMI). The more body mass over your ideal weight, the higher the number.
39 means you have slipped from 'overweight' to 'obese'. That's the magic number!

Copy that....thank you. I used to know the formula for BMI. Is it your height (in inches) plus your weight, divided by 140 or 170?
