Conway is hiring in my town (Billings, MT). The starting wage is 18.XX which is amazing... I'm just concerned about the schedule that the driver told me about. City drivers working 14 hr days is just way to much for me. If that were split up with a nice long drive somewhere in the middle (line haulers?) it wouldn't be so bad but that's way to long of hours and high intensity work for me. I just got on with another place here in town that work 10s and that sounds juuuust right.

terminals are run by the term. manager. every term. is different. getting hired into l/h would be the managers call.

if you do get a l/h gig, you will run "extra board" or what's left over. more than likely short runs (long runs go to seniority).

with seniority come the spoils, p/d or l/h. good money in the spring and summer, fall and winter are hard on the low-man.

lots of dock time, crap loads the senior drivers don't want. if you can stick it out it gets better. one of our senior drivers made $75k last year, runs one of our longest runs. i worked l/h for 6 or 7 months last year and took home $750 a week as a new driver on the shortest run we have. so if money is your thang, you can make it here.

like you, i didn't think i would like p/d that much when i started. i got put on p/d in september and love it. make $650-$700 a week.

and you can't beat the days off either. one year in and have two weeks vacation (pro rated).

if you seriously want to work for them, call and talk to the term manager every monday. ask about you application, tell him you are ready to work, you will mow the grass, clean the toilets, wash his/her car. that's how i did it. persistence.

    good luck

it varies on the hours, sometimes 14 sometimes 10. that's in the busy season. i worked 8's and 10's over the cold months.

i am home everynight around 9 or 10, and weekends off. with an occasional saturday.

go for it. the worst that could happen is you hate it and leave.LOL. i keep my options open all the time.

    good luck

Yeah, I'm kinda curious to see what he ended up doing.

I remember my first 3 years here were pretty decent then it tanked hard in 2007. I wish we could have bid flex or extra back then because we were getting booted after like 6 or 7 hours in the city for a while.

One of the things I liked about running line-haul for the last few years was the consistency of the hours - whether we were busy or slow I knew where I was going and knew it would be about 12 or 13 total hours and X amount of money. I took an early start time this year for a year off and so far I've been able to do 8 and the gate by choice but that will probably change in the next few weeks.

I've been hot and cold on this place for 8 years now but to me the upside is worth the BS so I'm here till they decide they don't want me anymore.

I seen they are hiring here in the charleston, sc area this evening. I'm gonna get my paper work together and fill out an app first thing tomorrow. I have been driving locally for years now and hope that may help. Hope it doesn't put me at a disadvantage. My main question here is I have been making around $50,000 gross the last few years give or take a few thousand. Starting out would I be able to stay in the same pay area? I understand that after my time in is done I should be doing well, I just can't afford to go much less than that right now as my wife is looking for work so all the bills are on me right now. Also how are benefits such as medical and does anyone know the cost for a couple. Thanks for any info and once I fill out the app and speak with some one I may have more.

I filled out an app and spoke to the local terminal today. They said if I don't hear anything in a couple of days to give them a call back. Only time will tell.

Had a question about getting hired with Con-Way. Once a guy has a cdl with doubles/triples and hazmat can you apply for any opening around the country they have and be hired or do you have to live in that state to be hired there? I live in Kansas and looking to take my family out west so I'm looking for opening out there with Con-Way LTL. Also, I talked with my local Con-Way p&d driver and he told me you don't need a year experience to be hired for linehaul or p&d for Con-Way, is that correct? I saw these guys pulling double and triples with Con-Way and said to myself "Thats what I want to do!" so I'd love to be apart of this company, I heres so much good about them.

LOL to get on with Con-way freight easy??? oh heck I work for Con-way TL .. an I applied for cwf an where I live they won't hire me seems being a Female truck driver has its disadvantage when it comes to the State I live in state is Louisiana.. they rather hire someone off the streets with less exper. Oh well guess I'll just move over to San Anthonio TX .. seems I'd have a way better chance. An I do have 8 yrs exper. also. but I do haul for cwf and ups and fed. an to get on with Cwt its not easy either .. ya lie about anything they will find it. honest is the Best all around!!!

DSR (Former Employee), LONG BEACH ULB TERMINAL CALIFORNIA
Pros: pay, weekends off, home daily(though only long enough to sleep)
Cons: horrible treatment, cameras in cabs, no breaks

Long days without breaks, they call all their employes DSR's (Driver Sales Representative) do to a loophole in the labor laws that state labor laws do not apply to sales reps, if you work the dock all day and decide to take a break after 12 hours they can and WILL fire you for stealing company time!

Aside from being treated horribly this is a great place to make money if you cant find a driving job elsewhere, they start at $20hr (or $0.42mi for LH) and work you 60-70hrs a week whether you like it or not, If you work on linehaul plan on sitting on the side of the road for a few hours every Saturday morning because they WILL run you out of hours every Friday night.

They will hire people fresh out of driving school so this is a good place to get the 1-2 years driving experience that other companies require! –
