I have a few questions about this mod.....

I have a Cobra 29 WX NW BT installed in my truck.. It's been peak/tuned, TRB X3 echo board, RK56 mic.. I am running dual Wilson 2000's... I am getting very good SWR readings 1/1.5.... They are both working good and I get out pretty good.. Just depends on where I am....

Anyhow I have been reading a little about the RFX-75 and I wanted to make a thread to see what the members at TTR think about this mod... I don't know much about it so maybe some more explaining would be nice too... I know some will say to run "amps" rather then the RFX... I am in a company daycab truck so I don't have room to have amps sitting on my dash nor to I want that much extra stuff sitting in the truck when others are about to use the truck when I am not working.. I think the RFX unit is a good compact way to achieve better output without all the extra amps cluttering the dash..

Now with this all said.. I still need to know some more about it.. I wanna know the good and the bad... Basically I wanna get an overal feel about this unit.. I wanna know what I am getting into before I actually order one (or depending on forum results if I order one at all)..

I do have one outright question to ask about this tho.. As I am not a guru when it comes to radios... I only know so much from what I read to I can get a better understanding of things.. In no way am I a electronics master and know all the ins and outs...

Since I don't completely understand this question could be stupid anyhow... This unit from what I know gives more output which allows you to be heard further correct??? So as I am reading up on it I am thinking to myself.. So if someone can hear you from miles and miles away but if they do not have some kind of big setup with amp or something similar what is the point in getting out that far if you the people your getting out to can respond to you??? I might be missing something here but I just dont understand....

I think it might be a worthwhile mod but at the same time when I ask myself that last question I wonder what is the point in it... So if there is a point in it can someone please tell me....

I don't see a point in getting out 40 miles ahead when the guy at that 40 miles can only go out 15 miles.... Catch my drift...

    Thanks

Also anyone from Ontario, Canada.... If I do get this installed does anyone know of a GOOD repeatable shop located in the Toronto/Durham area.. I know of Durham radio but I am not sure if they would install this or not......

    Thanks

the RFX unit was originally designed and comes factory installed on the magnum series radios. it is an entire final replacement section for a radio.

it is a MOSFET final, and with the cobra 29 radios, it seems to pack a little more punch than on other radios. i have a Galaxy DX88 that has one of these, and it does close to 90 watts.

there is documentation here on the internet that goes into the technical side of actual signal power output vs DB gain on a station, and i will not get into that as it is one hell of a discussion.

suffice it to say that there comes a point that wattage is useless. so many others out there are running crazy amounts of power, and you will simply get lost in the mix unless you have an export radio and you talk on one of the forbidden channels where there is less noise.

is it a worthwhile mod? probably so, but i say just get a small linear unless your company prohibits such devices due to ECM interference.

Well I don't like have a bunch of stuff in the truck as it just clutters the day cab for one and I am not the only one who is inside that truck.... Now I don't slip seat I am basically the only person who uses this truck... The odd time someone on the night shift might need to use it but this is few and far between.....

I just don't want to much stuff in it.... I know how my company works and to have that much stuff in there isn't good... Like if it goes in for service I have had it go missing for a couple weeks cause the morons fail to bring it back to the transfer station I work from...

I just think the RFX is good unit as far as compact goes.. It's attached to the unit so if I wanna take my radio out of the truck while on vacation or something it's just one unit I need to take out of the truck.... I also don't need to worry about some extra amp on the side....

So I mean if the reviews on the RFX are not good I just wont bother doing it at all... I know the export radios are suppose to be good too but I am not talking skip and I am not concerned about extra channels.. I just wanna give my radio a little more bump.... I picked the radio up and antenas for a good price so the overall cost of doing my echo and if I do this RFX mod still puts be in a good price range for what this radio I have cost new..

With that said... What is the better exports out there???

I seen a local guy selling a Magnum S-9 for $230cdn with power inverter.....

Now would I be better off spending money to put on the RFX-75 or getting this radio... Keep in mine my radio was peak/tuned already and already has echo in it.... I don't care about roger beep as I find this really annoying (more so when someone is having a full blown conversation and you hear the beep a million times over)

I have an old Galaxy Pluto set up as an "88" which from the factory I believe was 35 watt's. Well the final's were going out so Chris at the C.B. Radio Shop in Ontario, Ca., put in the RFX75 in my radio. Let me tell you, I get compliment's everytime Im talking on the my radio on how crystal clear and loud it is, and want to know what I have done to it. I run the Original Telex Roadking 56 Mic with it and my 1000 wilson. This set up work beyond my expectation's. I don't need an amp(linear) to get out. I can skip like any other radio using amp's but Im not a C.B. freak, Long as my radio does the job Im happy.

Anyone else have anything to add...

There is only 2 (Yes TWO) CB shop in my area that I know of... One will do modded cb's and the other one doesn't get into that.... So the one cb shop is $120 installed with a 1 year warranty.... Well that is a good way to go because one from ebay will cost me $40 plus shipping... So say $45-50..... The CB shop is $60 for the part and $60 for labour.... I guess they know they can get away with it considering they are the only ones around really.... In the end $120 with a warranty isn't to shabby anyhow... I mean even if you get it done for $80.. So what $40 more big deal...

    BUT....

I wanna know what the advantages are.... Yes I know you can run external amps but I don't wanna get into having other equipment in the truck.. This is self-contained attached to my radio.. I picked this radio up for a good price so getting this installed still makes the radio a good deal as opposed to buying a new export.. or even a used export....

I know they get you out further in distance.. Is there no other advantage?? I mean I guess basically you can only talk to other people that are running modded CB's??

I have read both good and bad about this unit.. but nothing really explains the workings of it.. I don't wanna spend $120 if it's not gonna be worth it for me to have on the unit... I don't mind spending the money but I wanna know what it's going to do for me first...

By making the talk back louder, your gonna get more feedback(squealing).

only if it's up to loud.... I just want a little more volume from it so I can turn it up until it squeals and don't go that high...

Is this what you mean if you turn it up to high?
