OH MY GOD!!!That must be one of the scariest things.... Thank you soooooo much for your post and telling us how you managed to keep truck under control. I had a trlr tire blowout once but the steer tire.... I hope it will never happen.... My CDL instructor told us it can break one's arm....
You guys were blessed to escape unharmed
I consider myself still a newbie so would like to ask some (maybe stupid question).... stepping on the break is a big no-no cause it would only make it more difficult to steer the truck, right?
So, one must be really strong to keep truck under control and steer on a situation like that until coming to a stop....![]()
I inspect the truck almost everytime I stop and give close attention to tires but hope and pray it never happens to me.... I am a 98 lbs female and not really strong....
Best wishes to you all!!
USX drivers...how's your day??

Stepping on the brake would put more weight on the front of the truck. You need to gain control of the truck. By stepping on the gas it will shift the weight back and off the front steer tires to allow you to gain control, then once you have control you let off the gas and if you can allow the truck to slow down and get off the side of the road.
That is why I asked Craig to explain what he did to control it. This is what I thought you had to do, and he pretty much told me my thinking was correct on this. -
Search the following string using Google or your preferred search engine and you will find a video that demonstrates and analyses what happens when a steer tire blows. It also demonstrates the correct action to take if this happens.
"The Critical Factor: Maintaining Control In A Rapid Air Loss Situation"
The video is narrated by Benny Parsons. -
No, you do not have to be that strong. Just an FYI, I was holding a mug of coffee in my right hand when this happened. Just do not panic. You have power steering on the truck and you just need to take it slow. If I had been in traffic I could have been much more aggressive in the recovery but it was not needed.
Rocks, mtnMoma, Tomegg and 1 other person Thank this. -
Anna, I would just accept the load and put a realistic ETA in the system. Not your fault you cannot get there on time.
-
I agree Craig,,,the FM and Load Planner already know where your at, how much time you have on HOS and how long it will take you, approx, to do what they are asking... I too would just except the load, send in ETA/PTA and role.... If shipper or receiver give me flack,,I tell them to call USX,,,I just drive....HOOAH!
I am glad however, that you got a load finally MusicgalmtnMoma and Jarhed1964 Thank this. -
Well, I made my delivery on time to TSC in Chester, NY I even had my next Pre Assigned Load before I got to my destination. The great thing is, the Pickup is a mile down the road
The bummer is, I have to take my 10 hr break now because I cant pickup till 23:30 tonight... Than I have to drive to Baltimore, MD for the 1st stop, than Baltimore again for 2nd stop,,,thats 05:00 for 1st one than 08:00 for 2nd one.. Than, off to 3rd stop at 11:00... Than off to final by 13:00,,,yes, all tomorrow..
No problem, I will Git-R-Dun and be thankful about it...mtnMoma Thanks this. -
Agreed, looks like Pennsyltucky and other parts in the NE are becoming freight "black holes" again. -
I haven't had a problem getting loads...??? Been in PA and the local region all week, well since the sunday before last...
ThaWarLock Thanks this. -
