It depends on the contractor. Most want a bigger pay check so they will choose to run the "team wheel" vs "day wheel" and some will have both depending on how many trucks he has. If you are wanting to go East to West and back, you are going to want one that is a Team Wheel contractor. In the slow months March-mid September you will make between 700-800 a week, where as in peak season you will make between 1000-1400 depending on the contractor. Each one will pay different so you should do your research before take a job with just one. As said in prior post, some pay W-2 and others pay 1099. Just do some research first!

Well, it apears that I will be joining the line haul o/o fleet. As son as my whizz test comes back clean I will be driving for a contractor here. The pay and conditions are better then where I am working now. Ony diference is no medical, dental, vision and 401K benefits. Fortunately for me I have the medical, dental, and vision covered by the U.S.Military. As for the 401K well with 2 retirements thus far and waiting for social security I dont need it either. Its a night run, but that is al I have seen locally since I started in 1989. Cant wait. Sounds like the gravy train we all are looking for.

I work for a pickup and delivery contractor for FedEx ground. The pay is terrible. You get a percentage of the load. A typical run pays about $33 but you get 40% of that. So you get about $13.20. This run takes about an hour so your getting paid aout $13.20 an hour average. Plus since they pay by the load, you don't get any overtime. So that $13.20 an hour becomes even less when you consider the fact your not getting any overtime (example regular job working 60 hours $13.20*40=$528. Overtime hours- $13.20*1.5=$19.80 overtime pay. $19.80*20 hours overtime=$396. So $528+$396=$924. FedEx Ground $13.20*60=$792) The only good thing about it is the job is easy. All drop and hook. No overnight and all local.

FedEx Ground is not your problem. I also drive for a ground contractor, started about 3 months ago. Pay is by the day, 5 days per week, paid holidays, and received my christmas gift/bonus today. The contractor (your employer) is the problem. Not all contractors are created equal. Your's sucks.

I also do p&d and get paid the exact way you describe. I was under the impression all the p&d guys get paid this way.

You're right, it's not the greatest pay especially with all the hours you put in, but it pays my bills for now until I can find something better. Do you use the automated dispatch system? I HATE that thing! I swear I hear it in my sleep, and it's so slow some nights I don't think I'll ever get home. Other than that, the driving part isn't too bad other than it's going to the same places every single night which can get monotonous.

Started with Fed Ex Ground when it was RPS. Stayed for about 12 years or so moving from P&D to linehaul contractor. Left in '04 to try another business venture that did not pan out. Ended up back at Ground as a linehaul driver March '11. Things have changed a lot over the years and not always for the better. But I work for a contractor who started with the co. when I did. Pays good, home every day all drop and hook and my run dosen't require me to run doubles. Down side to the whole deal is going to Woodbridge NJ every night. But I've learned to sit back relax stay out of the way and everything works out.

Not relevant, unless the driver also shares in the expenses. Your time and effort is worth $X to you and you will stay in a job as long as it's met. The contractor is there to make $$ also, and takes all of the risk. I'm sure it looks real good until equipment breaks, or a driver damages the tractor (with or without fault), only the contractor suffers the loss. The contractor I drive for had one driver hit a deer and a tractor spin a bearing just this month. Had to rent equipment to keep the runs covered, the drivers driving and getting paid, out of the profit.

I understand that. But technically your an expense. The profit is what's left over after every expense.
And you should only know the contractors expenses if your paid a percentage.
