It's unfortunate that it seems someone like you wouldn't help a fellow trucker like I have for her. When we did the math together and she found she Was ok to go, she accepted it.

In mike's quote it IS our bread and butter..and the codgering she received when she refused a bad timeline (with a request for a trade off when it was necessary, by the way) is inappropriate of ANY trucking company..because they can meet and exceed the regs, but Not undermine. Right at the top of the regs, it's in there. Take a peek and refresh your memory.

No one can tell me they haven't been in a place that they haven't asked Somebody or talked to Somebody about matters of basic math and travel.

EVERY trucking company out there has an expectation at some point of running over .. and they Should make the appropriate changes with the receiver but in many cases they simply don't. That's a fact not only with Crete SLC but other companies as well. Anyone who has any dignity not only understands this but will stand against them when they push the issue AND protect themselves appropriately when it continues to happen.
The more she had to remind them, the rougher it became for her, and so, my friend of close to 20 professional years as a trucker left them..protecting herself, her record, her health, her bread and butter And her dignity.

Anyone in their right mind would. THAT, my friend, Is a professional.

I'm sorry but to me part of being a professional driver is being able to make your own decisions without seeking the help of others. Especially if you supposedly have 20 years experience. I don't need anyone's help in determining if I have the hours to run a particular load. If I screw up I have nobody to blame but myself. If I followed your and advice and ended up driving illegally would you call Crete and tell them it was your fault? I have found over the years it is best to just keep your mouth shut because you never know how somebody may misconstrue your words (either intentionally or not).

I think you and your friend have confused the difference between illegal runs, and doing illegal runs.

I've emptied out many times and had them offer me a run that I couldn't run legally. I tell them I can't make the delivery on-time, and they'll tell me they understand, but they need to get the load moving. They'll tell me to pick it up, run what I can, and call Ops in the morning and tell them what my ETA is to the customer. This doesn't happen regularly, but it does happen, and there is an accepted way to deal with the situation.

But insofar as pressuring me to run illegally - I can state after a decade with the Big Red fleet, that they've never pressured me to run illegally! If I tell them I don't have the hours to deliver a load on-time, there is no pressure, no "off the record" conversations, no threatened lousy loads next time if I don't - they accept my statement as fact, and we re-schedule or re-power the load, period.

As a matter of fact, after that tragic incident in Florida four years ago, company policy prohibits Operations personnel from pressuring drivers to run illegal loads, under threat of termination if they do!

I'll be the first to admit - they may have offered her loads that she couldn't legally run in the time allowed, but all she had to do was notify Ops to change the delivery appointment. But as far as telling her "Screw the logbook! Run this, or else!"... I'm 99.99% sure it didn't happen.

I am sorry, but 20 years experience, and she needs you to tell her she can not do the run???? Or am I misreading what you have written?

It still comes down to communication with the company, and being willing to work with them also. And there are times, that although the driver can not make the delivery, the company needs the load picked up, and then they will reschedule the delivery, or relay the load to get it there on time.

Sounds to me that your friend was not cooperative, and unwilling to work hard within the rules and regulations.

since Crete did not work for her, it is good she left...but you and she can not put all the blame for her problems on Crete. She helped to create the problems too.

A bad timeline, to me means she could legally make the load, just not the way she would have preferred to do it. If this is the case, then I am surprised that she was not terminated, and explains the "problems".

Sorry your friend had so many problems with Crete, and not every company is for every driver. But she helped to create the toxic atmosphere you describe. Her leaving was the professional thing to do, but to put all the blame on Crete is childish at best. And for you to bad mouth a company with second hand information, your were not part of the phone conversations, is NOT professional.

I have been driving a truck almost 15 years, I have never "phoned a friend" to "do the math" to figure out if the run was illegal.

I, on the other, have run illegal knowingly, excessively, but that was a long time ago, before one of our drivers crashed in Florida and killed 8 children(he is in prison).

I have never been denied breakdown pay, hotels are always covered, I even stayed in a hotel 4 nights in a row once because my A/C wasn't working, I had to prod them on that one, but they paid.

Crete is not perfect, far from it, but when you find the "perfect" trucking company, PLEASE let me know.

I started driving for Crete in September 1995, a lot of things have changed, some good for drivers, most changes I consider not good for drivers. (my opinion)

I have had bad weeks, I have had good weeks. as of today, May 25th, I have 53278 paid miles this year, in 2007, I did 144000 paid miles, so obviously this year is not looking as good, but not too bad.

I'm a driver manager at Crete and on the first day of training I was told that pushing a driver to violate hours of service would result in termination. There is no need to push anybody to violate HOS laws, because at any given time there are likely a dozen or more trucks within 50-100 miles that can drop what they are doing and move a hot load.

Thank you Crete drivers for doing what you do. We are nothing without you.

I was reading these comments about Crete Carrier Corporation. I must agree with the person whom originally posted this discussion about this company. My overall experience about this company, and that is, they will charge you for their mistake. I will explain. Even though, the Qual-Comm says to fuel at this location, they will give you the first mistake for free, but if they were deceptive, and give you the wrong information, and you call them to ask for another fuel stop, because the first one did not exist, they will charge you the difference. Another person to watch out for at Crete Carrier Corporation. That person I am referring too is Jeff H. He hates rednecks, and not to mention, he refers to truck drivers as being stupid. You may be asking yourself this question. How do I know this? Let's just say, I am an employee of Crete Carrier Corporation, and this is with deep regret, but I wasted my time coming here. They never admit when they make a mistake either. It doesn't matter if the pay is good here, if you are not running that good, or if the truck breaks down, because it is old, and out of warranty. This company is full of promises, but the word is no good, or at least that is what I have seen. Let's not forget; they will not pay you the total amount for your breakdown. Yes, you heard that right. "They will not pay you the full amount that you are entitled to for your breakdown pay".

As soon as I can find something else, I will not stick around here much longer. They act like they care about you, but they really don't care about you. The truck driver is the lowest form of life on Earth with these people. When you go to the headquarters in Lincoln, Nebraska. When dispatch sees you; they give you a bad look, and not even say you are doing a good job. You are a nobody to these people, and I have seen this first hand. They try to get by with not paying your recruiting bonus, because it is not that important to them. Even though, they advertise the referral driver will get $500; if the driver they refer makes it through orientation, but they will tell you they do, but I have not seen the person who they claimed made over $27,000 in referrals. They are a lot like car salesman, they will only tell you what you want to hear in Orientation. Once you complete orientation, they change their attitude about you, and they start to treat you like you are worthless.

The term oppression fits this company very well, on how they treat their drivers. If you are looking to come to Crete Carrier Corporation. I hope this gives you some insight about this company. Keep in mind, this is what I have seen. Please, stay away from this company, or you will be treated the same way.I know you are probably saying this to yourself. Why are you telling this? I am not benefiting anything from this at all, but I want to tell you like it is. The reefer side to this company, is not any better. I can only hope you will take this to heart, because that is where I speak from. I hope this helps.

If everyone would tell at least one person, and they tell one person, we can ultimately make a difference in this world. The pen is always mightier than the sword. We can ultimately get rid of this company, and the sooner it is done, the better for everyone in the truck driving industry. You know how these companies hurt the driver, they hurt the driver through DAC, which is now called, "Hire Right".
