This will be my 3rd truck I'm REAL picky which is why my Crapcadia drove me nuts. As of today its gone. Great truck but not for me. I am going to stay with pre emission/electronics 05 to 07 trucks. It will prob be a Cummins or Detroit. Don't have enought info on the cats and have been told by several mechanics that work on them if its a dual turbo cat stay away.

There is more than enough info on this board and The Diesel Garage board to tell you almost everything you need to know about the ACERT CAT. If it isn't on one of those two then you just need to ask. There are many great guys on here with tons of experience.

I would not shy away from a ACERT motor either. But if you have a choice to go with a pre-emission (6NZ or later serial number) than I would go that route. But, personally I love my ACERT and look forward to finding out the true HP/TQ limits of it.

I'll give my two cents worth of advice,My exprience with my bxs acert has also been a good one at 800K only major work done to mine is water pump (@700K) and both turbos (@775K).I also had the heavy haul program installed on ecm and that made it into a good puller and average 6 mpg pulling close to 80K most of time....I would also consider getting another as long as it does not have the spark plug like the last of the acert's..

I've been told the same thing by mechanics I trust but these are old school types. Fine people but acerts have been around a long time the early bugs, kinks were worked out a long time ago. I trust my own judgement on this enough to where my next truck will be the lowest miles, well maintained acert I can find in an '07 W900L. That's based on what I've learned in this very forum because when I first became a member here I had that same old school un-informed way of thinking as the mechanics you talked to.

When they first came out they got a bad rap for poor economy mostly because guys just didn't know how to drive them. Acert's are engineered to be a low rpm engine 1300, 1350 that's your sweet spot cruising with an accert. 3:36 is the most common, probably the optimum, gearing for an acert equipped truck...

Whereas the older single turbos optimum gear set was 3:55 but they also had a sweet spot that was higher 1450-1500 rpms. Anything below 1400 is lugging my ST. So guys would wind the rpms up too high on an acert and then complain about poor economy. Or they would spec an acert with 3:55 which is way too low imo and going to drop your top cruising speed down, then driving it with the rpms up higher like a ST. Can't do that with an acert. Knowledge has increased about acerts as time has gone by. They are a fine engine and very reliable just like the older cats. Ultimately it's your money and you buy whatever you want.. Just know that acert is probably the easiest engine there is to tune and set up for optimum unmatched performance and fuel economy too.....

What are the preferred years for the Acert engines and what changes were made over the years.

Before you buy any truck you want to see the used truck inspection report, and if it is a Cat especially that a complete bottle test has been done, the CAC is good, percentage of clutch that is left, and percentage of brakes left. Check that the brakes have the same brake shoe depth top and bottom shoe, meaning the "S" cam bushings are good.
If they will not offer a warranty, RUN!
