It isn't that complicated to file for your authority. If you are a member of OOIDA they will act as your registered agent and file your BOC-3 at no charge. If you are not a member you can join for $45/year. They run a special at the end of they year and during the major truck show where you can join for $25/year.

and of course I am a member of OOIDA. They have the best insurance price around. I have been quoted as high as 12k for insurance. OOIDA's price is 6k. So I can't haul Landstars freight. Big whoop.

OOIDA's insurance is not accepted by all brokers. Before paying your money you might want to check with a few people with whom you want to do business to make sure they will accept OOIDA's insurance.

yeah. I believe its werner, landstar and a few others I don't even deal with for flatbed stuff. Either way. 12k is obsurd. I am sorry but that price is out of line on equipment from the 90's.

$12M is a bit too much on insurance. I think the most that I have ever paid was about $8,200, but that was hauling cars and $250,000 cargo. It was still high at the time. For the most part, rates have come down the last few years, but according to my insurance agent, insurance companies are trying to push rates up a little in an effort to stabilize the market. If you have at least 2-3 years experience and a clean mvr you should be able to get a decent rate. I have received competitive rates from Lancer, but my current insurance company still gave me a better price. The best thing is to find an aggressive insurance agent and let them shop around for the best rate. A friend of mine recently got a good rate with Progressive for 48 states. I think he pays less then $5,000/year for everything. There are a handful of Progressive agents who can write 48 state coverage for those who are new to the industry or getting their own authority.

You need to contact a Progressive agent in your state first. Out of state and direct agents may not be able to write a 48 state policy, even if the local guy can. I learned this the hard way, too late to back up. Although it has not been an issue. My agent says they're moving away from radius limits anyway.
