I am trying to decide between purchasing 2 different trucks. I will give the details of each and then hopefully I can get some help sorting it out.
Truck #1:
2011 Kenworth T660 40k miles
Paccar MX 455 w/no engine break and fuller 10 speed
62" Aerocab
3.36 gears
Truck #2:
2008 Peterbilt 386 390k miles
Cummins 470 with 13 speed fuller
70" ultracab
3.55 gears
Both trucks are priced right for their age/mileage. They are 2 trucks that the dealer has that I want, but I need to make a choice. I don't want to go shopping anymore and have narrowed it down so please don't suggest other trucks. Just based on the specs I have provided please help. I am concerned about the difference in sleeper sizes even though they aren't that much different as well as the engine/transmission combos.

I would say the Pete. Simply because Cummins has a better platform to improve upon. And I would take a 13 over a 10 any day.For Simple functionality. Plus the lack of engine brake on the Paccar.To me just isn't safe depending on where you run.

That is what I was thinking. I run the mountains a bit so the engine brake was an issue from the get-go. I just didn't know if it could possibly still be better. I also thought the 13 would be better for the mountains.

is 390,000 miles on a cummins really that bad anyways or am I over-reacting to the mileage because I am actually purchasing the truck. There are complete service records for the truck as well. It looks like it was properly maintained.

I would go with the Pete too. With that Cummins pretty much any shop can work on it. Lots of guys have Cummins engine experience. With that Paccar engine, your choices of shops that can work on it are limited to KW shops.

I think the new engines with DPF and SCR have been more reliable than trucks with just DPF, but in this case I'd go with the Pete. It's set up better and the ISX has been out there longer and all the problems with the engine are known and almost anyone can work on them. Also, there is probably a reason why the KW was gotten rid of after only 40k.
Another thought, if you are looking at a new truck, why not try to find a new '11 with a ISX and the specs you want. I wouldn't think that the KW with 40k on it would be discounted too much from a new one.SHC Thanks this. -
I highly agree. DPF is a horrible system left alone, the new DEF system makes them very reliable.
Also, with on 40k miles the MX motor still has plenty of warranty left for the things that pop up. The other is going to be out of warranty if it has the EXTENDED warranty when it was originally purchased, in say a year of normal driving mileage.... if it did not have the extended warranty then it's already out of warranty as I believe the std warranty is only good to 3yrs/300k
Also, the T660 has been proven to get some of the best MPG of just about any truck out right now. That alone will net you an extra $200-$400 a week depending on how bad the Pete gets (.5-1.0mpg improvement on 2500 miles a week)
Just saying, If i had the choice, I'd go with the T660 -

Well I have taken alot of the advice into consideration. Thank you all for your input. I found another truck. I will give you the specs on it, but I have ultimately decided I am buying it.
2011 Kenworth T660
Cummins ISX 470 w/ eaton fuller 13 spd.
72" sleeper & Tri-pac API
3.56 gears
Truck has 88,000 miles and does have the extended warranty purchased by original owner. The truck was a repo truck so it wasn't turned in for any problems with the truck. It is also at a KW dealer and they have gone over it. What do you guys think of that one?
