I'm new here, and I'm going to be taking a CDL class soon.
I want to be OTR for a few years, and of course we all have pipedreams about life on the road. Can any of you guys and gals here tell me the raw truth about a truckers life in 2011-2012?
I want to know the GOOD and the BAD aspects of trucking these days.
Thanks!

Lol truck driving is not glamourous. After 2 weeks seeing the country. The novelty wiill wear off. I drive my ### off. So i drive usually 10 plus hours a day. When your off your still in your walk in closet. You have dispatchers that are ######## and i really think they are taught that us drivers are pieces of ####.
On the flip side you dont have a person looking over your shoulder. As long as i get from point A to point B timely and safely they leave me alone.
I actually enjoy driving its the lonliness and yes it will get to u.jet460, Everett and paoldschool Thank this. -
For me i really enjoy being by myself, and never could team, due too listen rap music all night while trying too sleep, or trying too drag his carcass out the casnio , and his turn too drive, but so wasted and it delivers in like 3 hour's, so i drive it in , too name a few things about teaming, but on plus side, you see all 4 seasons , from the interstate and if your real lucky get all ny city loads, but i really like upper new york state, the fall colors are so nice, and if your dead sick , you still have too drive too make the appt, drive in all kinds of weather, wether or not you want too,

After 10 hours and 600 miles of driving, day after day, you really appreciate a good hot shower and a meal and comfy bed, however, it's not always meant to be. Sometimes no shower, or no meal, or comfy bed but very noisy surroundings.

-You'll have good days and bad days.
-You'll have good driver managers and bad ones. (or whatever your company calls them)
-You'll get lost and you'll know exactly where you are going.
-You'll encounter friendly customers and not so friendly ones.
-You'll deal with good drivers and ones you want to hit with a snow shovel.
-You'll have weeks where you make good money and weeks where you don't.
-You'll.......well you should get the point by now. Just keep this in mind as you read this message board. While it seams like the majority of posts on here are negative about this industry, there are probably just as many, if not more, people who are enjoying and thriving out here who have better things to do with their time than play in the sewer of negativity that this website has become.reptij, Hootie, mile marker and 2 others Thank this. -
Ok, what life on the road is really like. First if you have kids or are married, i will first warn you it takes time to actually understand and respect that fact that life at home will go right on as usual with out you, as a father of 2 kids its a hard task every morning to know my son ( 19 months ) is growing and learning without his father around, on that same note I know that I am the SOLE provider for my house hold and this is all I know. Once you can get over the "home sickness" of life on the road and after you get past the student pay and begin to actually start making some money, that is when life will become easier. *TIP* Dont listen to people at truck stops and let them fill your head with b/s about leasing a truck, unless the company you are running with is ABSOLUTELY horricific try and stay for 1 year, after your year is up your options for other companies will open up. Out side of all that enjoy the ride take one day at time as you will have great days and days all you wanna do is turn your truck in.. You wont get rich, and you wont get alot of respect (other than slef respect ) but end of the line, its really all about what you make it, gl hope you like it out here as it is not for everyone...

As Forrest Gump said life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gettin til you bite into one. Same with trucking every company has it's up's and down's, they all have good and bad dispatcher's. Every State has it's good and bad as well as every city. There's no such thing as a good Lot Lizard. Every load has new challenges whether it be just in time delivery, weight issues or even too much time. Every season also has it's challenges and it's good times. There's nothing like seeing the sun come up in the morning over the rocky mountain's and seeing it set in the pacific. The traffic always sucks when you're in a hurry, never fails. The food is solely dependent on your tastes! some good most bad in my opinion. also hit up the independent truck stops they usually have the best food. This career is a LIFESTYLE not a job! so remember it's only what you wanna make it. But it's by no means a cake walk. Good Luck and Safe Travels

Everything above. Just will add that, with elogs, you will be forced to sit on a side street in the middle of nowhere because you can't go anywhere or waste those precious hours. Elogs have really taken the freedom out of this job.

I have a quistion on e -logs then , if thats true what last poster said, then im on the street ok, and cant move, so what if a police man whos very potty mouth and very rude, ( ya you guess right a ny cop ) tells me too move or lose it too a towing company , then what do you do, ?
and your 35 miles from the nearest truckstop?
