need some help. for the last 2 years iv been trying to get my A-Z with no luck. im going to be 20 Jan 23. trucking runs in my family and im trying really hard to get into the trade. i live in north bay ontario and there isent to many jobs here so for the last year iv been laid off. and im trying to find a way to pay for my A-Z training at transport training centres here in north bay. but its almost $8,000. iv been almost everywhere. i dont have credit to get a loan and i cant get EI. i know EI pays for that training but i cant get it. iv tryed to get info everywhere. none can seem to help me. i guess what im asking is does anyone know of a place or someone that lends money. iv been to YES employment and nothing. my friends and faimily are eather poor or dont want to help. and while im at it i might as well ask. where might a good place be (if i get my AZ) to apply for a job. i have no tickets at all. and i want to stay out as much as posible. im young and no wife/kids so might as well "have fun" now lol thanks in advance

this is what i did to get my class 1, and it only cost me under 200 bucks. i kept hounding bosses to give me a chance to work in the yard and learn the ropes, with a chance later on to do some yard shunting. bust your ### and take every shift you can ,even if it's your birthday and you have plans. even if you volunteer, eventually you will get some one to believe in you to give you a chance. you said, "iv been ALMOST everywhere". GO everywhere. when that is done, go back and start again.
by doing this you won't have a $8000.00 loan to pay back. -
Thanks. But there are 2 problems with that 1 is i have talked to the companys here in town and. None will even look at me without my a-z or d-z. Even for like storage work. I valentered and all. I do work my ### off. My last job i was the only one who wanted to work the over time and holidays. Crap like that. 2nd issue is yes i said iv been ALMOST everywhere. Reason i havent been everywhere is i dont know where else to go. Iv even been to the companies that have really bad names around here. Just so i can get my foot in a door. I dont know where you live but here in north bay there are no jobs in any market. Im willing to travil for work but i have no money to do so. Thats why i posted on here see if anyone knows anything i dont. But thank you at least someone posted.

Go to the LTL carriers in town and get an entry level job working in the yard, working n the dock, working in the shop and work your way up from there. That way you have a job and when you prove to them that you are a good employee/hard worker they will train you to drive. Couple that with having eq in the yard to practice with....pretty good deal>free training.

mgfg.. thats what i am saying, go in as a labourer not as a driver to be. get your foot in the door then start up the ladder.
bigeric. i started out unloading farm equip at a farm equip dealer in northern alberta, pop, 3500, then got to start loading tlrs at a trucking company. only one in town. from there had to get other job (a&w) to save up money (they decided to retire) to move 20 miles away to bigger city to get next trucking job. as i have always said.... every thing works if you let it. -
Cross over the border and get a green card. Next join the US Army. They will allow you to work for them for a total of 7 years and then you have to decide to become a citizen or not. They also have a truck driving program its called 88M. They will use you mostly in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you are lucky they will give you a European assignment. I will admit you are lucky to be Canadian!

he can do that with the canadian army

There ya go!!! What bobbyt said!! If this is an option for you to get the assistance you need then why not serve your country for a minute?
mtnMoma Thanks this. -
I also live in North bay and you are correct about finding it hard to get hired. There are basically only 3 companies but 2 of them wont touch you without 2 to 3 years experience. The only company I have found that will hire a newbie is Pro North. I have spoken to drivers. Have heard good and bad things about them but you will find that in any company. They wont touch you either until you get your AZ.
As for training Transport Training Centre here in North Bay wants about 6800 (I called a few weeks ago) for thier course and 5th Wheel in New Liskard wants 9000. I was told by two different people that 5th Wheel in New Liskard is better and more preferrred.
In North Bay I think your SOL (##### out of luck).....try asking other drivers here online if companies in Southern Ontario will sponser new drivers. Maybe you can find a company that will pay for you to take the AZ course and in return you sign a contract and work for them for a specific period of time. This way you will get the course, gain experience and then be come back to North Bay.
You are young and able to leave the area for awhile....just a thought. Good Luck -
That won't work in Canada. Unlike the USA, Canada has never endorsed slavery. You will have to pay for your schooling yourself and move on from there.
