Thanks for the reply Willies Trucking, and it is now and as it has always been my goal to help others. I have a 37 year record of helping. Although my OR-1 experience was long...it was rewarding. I too have my CDL Cass A with past experience. I thought my OR-1 time was a wast of my time, but others on this site help me to "get over it." And guess what...I got over it. Now I'm ready for OR-2. That's what this site should be about, and not throwing rocks at the company or each other. So Willie as my favorite poet says, "get'er done."![]()

Got caught up in a traffic jam on the NJ TPK this morning. Firey crash involing 3 trucks. Luckfully nobody was injured. REMEMBER 6 SECONDS!!!
Anyhow I get 5 hrs to devliver from Swedesboro, NJ to Harriman, NY on this nice little dedicated Im on. Comes in handy for days like today. Made it here just on time and got a door right away. Yesterday got in just after 8 and waited 4 hours lol! -

Passed a wreck over Snoqualmie day before yesterday. Five trucks, all with bashed in front ends. Bent Bumpers on back of trailers.
Obviously all following too close. Fortunately, no one hurt, but from the looks of things, there will be lots of 'splainin' to do for those drivers!
Remember...as House said...6 SECONDS!! -
Sounds like what happens here in Western Michigan after the first snow. Bumper Michigan!

Yeah Triple D you are absolutely right..... This site should be only to help each other out and not to trash a Company or a driver....
I see that you have alot of experience, i wish i was in your shoes. I wish i had the experience, but i dont have it. My plan is to go with Stevens to get train and to get experience. Also wish to work for Stevens for the rest of my life. I dont pretend just to go there just for the trainning, i WANT to work for them also. I have a wife and a son (2 years old) i am going to miss them dearly, but thank God i have the support of my wife on what i want to become, they understand that what i am about to do is for them, and to provide a better future for them. Dont get me wrong, i LOVE to drive and not only driving i would like to be a safe driver, that what it counts...
Thats the reason that i want to go to Stevens, because they have the tools to teach you to become a better and safer driver. Thanks again for all your advise and i will keep them in mind, be safe out there and like i said, hope one day we can meet up to talk about trucking because to tell you the truth i need to learn alot of stuff. Thanks again Triple D
Be safe

Well, I wanted to make it all the way through this thread before I posted anything. But I'm only 110 pages in so far, I fly down to Dallas Friday, and this next week is gonna be pretty crazy. So I don't think I'm gonna be able to finish.
I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread. It has been quite informative.
I start orientation at Stevens on 10/16, and have a couple questions/concerns. Forgive me if they've already been covered.
First, I have Restless Legs Syndrome, and am currently on medication for it (Requip). It (the RLS) generally doesn't bother me except when I'm laying down to go to bed, and won't be an issue for me while driving. However, the medication does come with a "drowsiness" warning. I've been on it for 8 years, and it doesn't effect me that way. But I'm afraid this might be an issue for Stevens. I had no problem passing my DOT physical, and I'm bringing a clearance letter from my doctor. But it seems like Stevens has their own standards when it comes to stuff like this. Does anyone think it's gonna be a problem?
Secondly, after reading about all this sleep study stuff, I'm somewhat concerned. My neck is right at 18". However, I did a sleep study about 3 years ago, and it was determined that I don't have sleep apnea. Will Stevens probably make me go through all that again anyway?
And lastly, I graduated with my CDL on 9/2. So that'll be a month-and-a-half that I've gone without driving a truck after just 3 weeks of training, and I'm most likely gonna be a bit rusty. Do they test your driving/backing skills immediately? Or do you get at least a little time to practice on the yard before you're tested?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks! -
ok, you will not be tested on your driving skills untill graduation week regardless of the fact you have a cdl. You will be graded daily and need to show improvement. You will have time to drive on the yard. Did you go to a cdl school that was affiliated with stevens? If not you will have to go through the school here again. The medicine will be a problem regardless of a doctors note. The doctor on cite here will determine what is ok and what is not. If it is a narcotic it could cause some problems, just make sure you disclose all that to your recruiter. If your neck is bigger than 17 inches you will most likely be doing the sleep study. If i could give you any advice it would be to lay this all out for your recruiter.....they will find out more than you think they could. They will work you on ,ost anything but if you lie at any point they will send you packing, saw 20 guys go home this week thinking they could keep things to themselves. Good luck, I love it here so far!!GSWx and LittleCasino Thank this.

one correction on shiftylots reply.. If you have a CDL, you DO not go to the driving school at stevens. You will be tested, to see if you have the basic skills to go out with a trainer. The school you went to does NOT have to be affiliated with Stevens. The school I went to was NOT affiliated with stevens. If too much time passes between school graduation and arrival at stevens, they will not recognize the school training.
The Dr. On site, will determine what drugs you may take, and stevens has a stricter policy than the government. Be up front.GSWx and LittleCasino Thank this. -
One more clarification...if the trainers decide you're a bit too rusty to go out with a trainer, they will normally schedule you for some remedial training during the week which will bring you up to par. Then send you out a week later.
It's pretty hard to flunk your qualificatioin drive, tho. As long as you can make half your shifts, don't run grandma over on the sidewalk and don't wreck, you'll pass.
Stevens doesn't expect you to be a driver. They expect you to have a CDL and be able to do the bare necessities. Trainers are there to teach you to drive.
I doubt remil will be a problem, but if you want to feel more confident, call the recruiter at Stevens and have them ask the doctor. If there is something extra they will need such as a statement from the doctor, they'll tell you.LittleCasino Thanks this.
