I'm same as you unemployed carpenter, Theres no carpenter money in trucking but we gotta do what we can.
From what I have gathered here try to find a local school that's PTDI certified, Theres one in Lancing, Il. called Progressive Thats right across the border from you. -
John,It would help if you will explain if you are looking to go to a company school,or private in Chicago area.
I have researched both,and at one time a union carpenter..small world. -
Ya, I'm union and things were good for the first 10 years but its been ruff these past 2 and now I'm just trying not to loose my home.
As far as the school, well I have next to no money so that might make that choice for me. Other then that I dont know anyrhing about any of these schools so I'd love ur input on All or any of them.
I found there are a few near by , cr england being one of them and from what I'v read on here they dont seem good, c1 is not too far ,but havent read anything good about them ether.
I am thinking I'd rather finance my own schooling then get screwed on it. Thats if they'll finance me. -
John,I can give you a few tips to get you started but you need to do the legwork.
Call the county workforce division and ask about the WIA program.
If there is a list..get on it.
There are strict requirements with that program on past history, income, etc. but if you qualify it is a great way to go.
Check it out they may be able to help fund driving school.
The last route to go is a company driving school.
That is where you go to their school and pay back none or some of the money with a contract for a year or more.
You can use the search option in the top right of this page on any trucking company or subject.
Read as much as you can, then decide what is best for you.
Swift,Prime,Centeral Refrigerated and others have company schools.
Research all of them if WIA is not an option.
Private driving schools have finance companies.....most are unreal interest, but you have to decide what is best for you.
Good Luck -
I think that unfortunately you union guys are in for a very rude awakening. Long haul trucking is nothing like unionized constructon. You will put in more unpaid/free time in your first week than you ever did working union construction.
I wish you success but WOW... -
im union and havent had a contract in 6 years plus the town i work for went infront of the labor board and the labor board sided with the town and took our step raises away.so through out the the past handfull of years i've been losing money with insurance premiums and the cost of living going up. plus working for a municipality i have a no strike clause in my 2006 contract we've been going by. so not all unions are great to work for, mine sucks.

Like I sail...I was a union carpenter....At one time.
I gave him alot to look into,it is not that hard to figure out we made more money in the past. -
Putting in free work isnt something I like to do, but not working at all sure isnt getting me paid.
And yes, I was making good money. I had to work hard for it, and it sucked must of the time. I,m still willing to work but theres almost no jobs and thousands of carpenters who are screwed just like me.
I was hoping things would turn around but that dosent seem to be happening. On top of that I like to build things but theres alot I really hate about construction. It's mostly all the cut throught pos's that I'm refering to.
