That is a lot of carriers. Of course that also includes the carriers that own one truck and I doubt they hire newbies. However yes there are a lot of options out there other than Werner and yes many of them suck as bad if not worse than Werner.
When most new drivers start driving they do it from where they are currently living, this limits the number of those 613,242 carriers on file that will hire them greatly. There are options but a lot of people just do not want to look that hard to find them, they just want the quick and easy. They often find out though that the quick is not that easy.
You would be right that there are people that like Werner. I do know more than you can count on one hand. I would not include myself in that group as I do not really like them a lot, but I have done OK working for them for almost 4 years.
I work for them because they have what works for me where I live. Yes the first 3 months I was there sucked and if I had been less of a man I would have quit and come here and said how much they sucked. If I had some of the issues others have described that are more extreme than the ones I had I may have done the same.
I did have problems with my first truck. I did have problems getting good miles for a few months. I did however work out these problems and still made nearly 47k my first year with them.
I still have problems with them on a fairly regular basis, but none that I cannot handle, at least not yet. If I could make what I make and be home as much as I am elsewhere I would do it, I just have not been able to find that yet and I am always looking.Lonesome Thanks this. -
If they advertise you do not want to work there.

Sounds like some one who works for werner, they must be trying to do damage control. Yeah, maybe I should have done more research. I thought W was just more reputable than swift, knight, us press, crete, prime, I guess they all suck its corporate bs at its finest.

Hi, my forum name is Nyman, and I work for Werner. Man, that felt like the opener at AA! But I digress... Is it bad? Sometimes. Do I believe I am smarter than my dispatch staff(especially nights and weekends!)? OH YEAH! Do I get run in circles like an outhouse rat? You betcha.
But here's the thing: I'M NEW. I may be be more mature, had experience in similar types of work, and am not naive`, but that means exactly ZERO to a trucking company that is not considered "bottom feeder". I have to prove that I can not only maneuver a 40 ton combination vehicle safely, I can do it quickly, be on time consistently, and be trusted. That takes time.
So time is what I spend here, getting the experience I will use to eventually go somewhere else. It is what it is. If someone has a better idea, other than some lame "fight the power" nonsense, I'm listening. Until then, I accept my reality and deal with it accordingly, and try to stay clean.
Am I happy? I'm happy I have a job. Is the pay great? No, but, unless you graduated from M I T and went fortune 500, where are you going to start with a great pay scale?
Last, I DID do research, and Werner was MY choice. It's not the best, not the worst, just where I gotta do the time.runningman0661 Thanks this. -
were i got to do time? LMAO!!!
WOW! I would look for something else to do with my life.
The day I wake up and say "I'm just gonna get fed sht and take it and also not et paid because I need to earn my bones and do my time" is the day I hang it up and look for something new to do. I refuse to live like that. -
well i can say werner is not a bad company....each company has its ups and downs.....not a bad company for someone w/o experience.....but i did get screwed i worked for them and almost getting my six months experience i got terminated cause i recieved a ticket for making a wrong turn and ended up on a wrong road....mistakes happen but now im trying to find another job and its hard w/o that exp.

I'm almost tempted to go drive for Werner just to see how bad it really is.

Just name one thing that stood out about Werner that made you think they where more reputable then any of the carriers you mentioned. But please allow me to get a cold one and a pillow because I know it is going to be a long wait

Werner, CR England, Swift, Stevens or Prime. Starter companies, do your time and move on. Newbies have to start somewhere. No matter where you go or what job you have there will be malcontents in every company.
