I submit that all newer trucks are garbage so I don't really care what they build. Why the hell would someone drop $120k on a new truck, not counting interest on that wonderful loan, when you could pick up an old truck for $30, retrofit it with $50k worth of new parts and tech, and still be way ahead on cash?
I feel the same way about new cars. Why? You buy a new car/truck and it gets older and more worn out with every payment. Or you buy an old one outright and it gets a little newer with every part you put on it.
long hood trucks obsolete in 5 yrs or less?

Kajidono is right on but new trucks also come with drivetrain warranty but I still would rather go with K's idea. The only thing that longhoods are notorious for is being loud even when they idle everytime Im at the Ts and Im sound asleep here comes a longnose and parks next to me and everytime they idle to high rpm's WHY? wakes everybody up. Also the exhaust in this trucks is strong not like when your next to a 2010 with a quiet exhaust and emmision controls...Im not hating on the hoods just pointing out personal experience.

I think there always be a want for the hoods. Not so much for the cabovers. What would a truck show be like without hoods?
-
The industry is going to build what the drivers want to drive. Yes they are making more aerodynamic trucks but they are also working to improve fuel economy while keeping the style of the hoods. The new W9's are built to look classic yet are better on mileage. I think this is the way it will always be.

What I think most people don't understand is the W900 is the exact same cab as the T800, T660, C500, T440, T470, T370, T270, T170. The only real difference between any of the above class 8 models (W900, T800, T660, C500) is the hood and the front axle placement. So for KW to stop making the W900 the only part they would stop making is the hood. So even if they only sold 3 a year it wouldn't make any difference in they're manufacturing costs.

Most of Landstar Fleet, Yes I know their(our) fleet is all O/O's, I just had to throw it out there. God I love my W900
JNJ also running hoods W9's

I have more short hood and aero trucks that park near me and most of the time they are noisier, fans cycling up and down and such, than the longhood trucks. I'd rather be parked by longhoods more than aero/fleet trucks. One reason, most are O/Os so they are more likely to be careful moving in and out, the other is they are less likely to idle all night in comfortable conditions. I'll bet my 379 is quieter than most aero trucks and I even have hi-flow mufflers on it and they are quieter than most of the new OEM mufflers. You can complain about the longhoods being loud, but how many aero hoods run around with a straight pipe on it?
-
I can almost bet I get better fuel mileage week in week out with my 2000 long nose 379 then most fleet areo junk. It has almost 1 million miles has one rebuild on her, screams like crazy but I love it. Pulling my flat I average over 7.5mpg. Most of my stuff is short haul. I might drive 2-300 miles a day roundtrip from home.

W900L is the only truck I would ever buy....but it would have to have a 550 kitty cat with a 86' studio.......nothing else would do for me....Interstate and WatsonDL1 Thank this.

It's probably inevitable, but lets hope semi truck design doesn't go here!
