I've been in school for a week now...take my permit test on Monday. The topic of where we want to work is a constant subject of discussion. Honestly...flatbed sounds most interesting...but I guess at 61 I have to be realistic...I'm not getting any younger. That's okay. Somebody said that driving a refer was a good way to go...because in a poor economy...people still need food...but I'm not sure I see any real advantage to refer....do you? Waiting for live loads...etc? I keep getting steered toward Schneider...that's fine...but I get the feeling that there's a corporate culture there that makes some people uncomfortable...they have their own way of doing things is what I hear....what does that mean? I want miles..i hope I don't have to sit a lot ...happy just to run.

Wow, Been on this forum about a month now and finally I made it to the Old Man Thread. Welcome guys. I'm 49 pushing 50. This is my second time around driving truck. I had kept my CDL current throughout the years along with my medical card but I still needed a refresher course before anyone would hire me. I didn't see nor do I think any of the companies out here will discriminate because of age. I got pre-hired by several companies and I am going with Prime. All the big carriers have some disgruntled drivers saying things about them. But I have found that happens in just about every field of employment.
The only real advice I can give at this point is to fill out as many on line apps as you can. This way you have several choices of companies to choose from.
    Good Luck!!!!

You are younger than one of my son-in-laws. My hubby is 60...almost 61...and he just restarted driving. I would hate to think that 42 is too old to start over...that's YOUNG! Good luck..,.and like someone else said...STAY FLEXIBLE!:biggrin_25525:

LOL. I did not say that I was to old, friends/family are telling me that. I think they are just having a hard time with the fact I have decided to move on. like I said in my post it's been 20 years with the GOV. I think it just shocked them that I was willing to take a chance at something new.

I started over at 54,just turned 55 and now have 1 year in as a driver.
I've already landed a decent paying local daycab gig hauling woodchips, just finished a week of training, I'm happy to be home for the weekend and not sleeping in a truck lol.

I figured I would get out here and get a few years back in the saddle. Then hopefully my wife will join me on the road.

TiredinAZ: I'm 47, was in the military for 20 years, had a couple of jobs since, only as old as you feel. I just started trying to get in trucking.
