All I ever hear is some mexican woman counting in spanish with a god-awful roger beep. Then the occassional clowns audio'in.

How's a guy 'shoot' skip...?? What's the point? It's pretty annoying. It seems like it comes and goes at the flip of a switch...I know its dependant on atmospheric conditions but I wouldn't think they change that quickly.

I was out in the quarry (just west of Portland OR) the other day (they all use CB for loaders and to direct the trucks) and we were all getting hit hard by some wench touting the services of a CB shop in ILLINOIS! She was coming in so loud and clear it was completely disrupting all local contact. If you did not have some power you were getting stomped in the dirt by a station more than half way across the US!!!! And it had been going on for quite some time according the the office folks. I was going to do a lookup on the shop and give them a phone call! :^)

It was like she had a very clean radio (not barefoot) and a beam antenna pointed right at the pit from a mile or 2 away. Some of you OTR guys may know that station/shop.

Does Solar activity (storms) affect CB this way? I heard on the news that there were some large solar storms recently.

Some years ago I was having trouble on the freeband passing some semi important traffic from my base to my GF in the mobile at 7 or so miles.A nice gentleman in Poland with a +40 DB signal relayed the message for me.

The point of shooting skip? For the fun of it. To see just how far you can talk on your CB. But you have to see your CB as more than a tool (as a hobby more the less) to really enjoy skip shooting. Yes it comes and goes. But really it's a way to see how far you can get heard.

Perhaps she wanted you to drop by sometime on a road trip and buy. :biggrin_2559: Since she was coming in so well, I'll bet you probably could have radioed back to her. It's also possible she was running heat, as some CB shops do to advertise their business on the air.
