Stab or Controlled Breaking Which Best/Fastest ?

Since you don't say where you are from....exactly which State has "lock em up", or words to that effect in the CDL manual?

 

Which is it the fastest/best to do to what ? Controlled braking to stop, Stab braking decending a hill. Those are my opinions

 

Braking down a mountain doesn't really have anything to do with emergency braking which is what the OP was about.

 

All states are supposed to now be using the 2005 Testing Model manual Revised July 2008. If all states are indeed using this manual then they all have "Apply your brakes all the way. Release brakes when wheels lock up", for stab braking during an emergency stop.

 

You are correct but there are certain training videos out there that do incorrectly refer to on and off braking on a downgrade as stab braking.

That's snub braking, AKA the 3/5 rule.

 

The Emergency Stop procedures portion of the CDL manual (Arkansas) is outdated. Modern ABS systems essentially replace controlled & stab braking procedures. When the ABS system actuates, it automatically stabs the brakes. To control your stop, do not press the brake pedal far enough to cause the ABS system to actuate. Controlled braking is theoretically preferable because the tires have continuous friction against the pavement. Disregard if your truck is not equipped with ABS.

 

Good suggestion! These DOT manuals are outdated by 40 years. Whenever you stab brake or are just plain braking hard you should be watching your mirror for a hint of trailer jack knife, that will be the signal to let off the brakes whether you have ABS or not. Hopefully you are not tailgating the car in front of you so you can see what your trailer is doing in the mirror!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

ABS systems can not be trusted when light weight and in slick conditions. Keep your distance so you can watch your mirrors, if your trailer jacks let off the brake!!!!!
