Now I know you have never driven here. We get snow and ice just the same, and Penndot does not maintain the roads very well when it snows. You said in your previous post that 8% is normal for wherever you are from. That is normal for Pa too. You also mentioned logging roads, well we have gas well, windmill, and strip mine roads that are just as bad and steep.
Steepest grade you ever pulled or went down.....

Nah... just a little twisty on the northbound side. The only deal with Mont Eagle is all of the flat landers that think comin' down it at 80 mph with their brakes smokin' is how its done!

Colorado, US 550 through San Juan National Forest. We were deadhead to Durango for a load of Spuds. 2011-May

Sonora Pass, Ca108, Ive seen trucks hung up on the rocks there all the time when i go camping. The switch backs are what get you. ive seen 4-wheelers with there disc brakes glowing red at the bottem at night all the time.

The 550 in colorado is definitely a steep mtn grade. I love it when the guys from out east come out west and they re-think what a steep mtn grade is. Ours have some length to them too. And for Penn driving, been there many times , I am sure you have some tough off highway grades but all your interstates (I have been on all of them and with ice and snow) might be tough to you now but come on out and I will bet money that 4th of july pass in ID on i-90 going east or west into lookout pass (id to mt) would be an eyebroe raiser to ya and its not even the longest, steepest or toughest.
popmartian Thanks this. -
drove it once, not impressed

Coal Bank is the tamest, Molas, dropping into Silverton will raise an eyebrow (semi went off the side about 2 weeks ago near the bottom), Red Mtn. WILL get your attention and fast.

anyone ever need a pusher truck like in IRT's? or one for braking?
-
Agreed with Mont Eagle. Always thought Red Mountain was rather fun. Great view of Ouray from up there!

Thanks, US 550 through coal pass is on the same road as Silverton, from Grand Junction, to Durango. Yes some very steep switchbacks. could not stop to take a pic until we got to coal pass. Not recommended during winter unless you like chainin up.
