Where I live if I wanted to go the company driver till retirement route I would be looking at ABF, R+L, or MBM. The pay, hours and home-time would be much better. My personality dictates I go the owner/operator route.
As for loosing out on detention pay for being late, your qcomm in the truck shows the time you entered the arrival call even if the system is down. That gave you the evidence you were on time. Sometimes you have to be proactive to get the extras. Personally I never count on any detention or layover pay from any company.THBatMan8, Rollover the Original and DrtyDiesel Thank this. -

Thank you! Exactly my point! Why does Roehl have to set itself up as a starter company? Because they have gone the Schneider Werner Swift route! Well, nobody said they had to! And add to this the old man who started the company loved the drivers, was a driver, the drivers were the precious resource of Roehl. His son takes over the company, a businessman who knows drivers as a commodity, was never a driver, and the drivers become numbers, cogs in a wheel, as someone else said on this thread. And so, Roehl becomes a coolie carrier.
By the way, I work for a starter company that has mostly daycabs - home every night, starting pay is prolly about in line with Roehl, pays for orientation (Roehl doesn't) pays for meals on the road, furnishes you with a tire pressure gauge for every truck, doesn't charge you $10? $15? for a fuel filter wrench for your company truck if you want to keep up maintenance while on the road for however long, doesn't charge you for strap winders, and uses ACTUAL BUNGIES instead of those cut up inner-tube bungies that are basically useless because the old man's other son, the son without the brains in the family, took over shop operations at Roehl.
Roehl is a cheap company that recycles new drivers in when older drivers move on as a way to save money on driver pay. It's a coolie carrier. It didn't start out that way. It made a choice to become what it is: top of the dregs of the trucking industry.
I don't mean to rant, but ####, the Roehl cheerleaders seem to have taken over and Roehl seems to be better than CSX! ExxonMobile? Walmart? Nah, I'll stick with Roehl! Thanks though!
What the new drivers need to know is the good and the bad of Roehl, not someone blowing sunshine in their ### 24/7, and getting them juiced up to sign on with a coolie carrier. If you get them juiced up to sign on with someone, let it be someone like Gate Gas, also a starter company by the way, where you would be home every night, and who pay you by the hour, and pay you for orientation, and I don't imagine they would charge you for your prepass (nickel and diming it all the way).
And one last thing to the newbs, going into Canada is not worth it IMO. Look at the amount of time you will spend getting all the paperwork together and placing phone calls and faxing crap back and forth, and look at your first check for those loads. Add it up.
Now, onto your reactions, which may be more defending Roehl to the very death, or may be more productive, like huh, well, you can start out at Roehl, but this is what you have to look out for, this is what they do badly. That's what the new drivers need to know. -
it's cool that you don't like Roehl, I'm all for it. There are things I don't (didn't) like about Roehl. I wouldn't go quite as far as you do, but then again there are times I want to be taken seriously. Throwing personal insults out there takes away from the validity of your post.
notezbngrn71 Thanks this. -
No I seriously doubt union drivers make more than me, but they do half the work that I do for almost the same amount. And I just do not like unions, no need to dig any farther than that. Like I said before roehl is horrible. Worst company ever. Good companys are listed above, walmart, nestle, any private fleet, and a ton of small carriers. If you only put negative things in your life don't expect positive results. Most of the complaints are valid, but also found at dang near every other large carrier, so stop whining grab your steering wheel make money and go home! It's really that simple, that's what new drivers need to know, do your job stop complaining, get your year in and if your happy stay if not leave, its honestly that easy.
sewerman, Takitawl, DrtyDiesel and 1 other person Thank this. -
Yea looking back at that statement, I think I would go to mcdonalds instead and flip burgers

For all of you that think you know everything, obvisously you do not know anything about Roehl or you are a company buttkisser, of which will get you know where. Of course some on here like Preacherman make it sound good, for one thing Preacherman is a rent to own driver so he does not technically work for Roehl and does not have to put up with their garabage, he also gets paid for each recruit, so think about it, why do you think he wants you to go there. People use your heads a little. Also Roehl's turnover rate is way over 68%!!! As far as cameras in trucks, they do too, and I could list pages of truck numbers that have them and yes there is a camera facing out the front of the truck and also one on you from waist up at all times!! There have been MANY drivers and driver trainers with many years experience that have quite Roehl because of how they are treated there. If you are so gullable and believe it is great then go there and find out for yourself and you will see, I do not care what you do, just trying to be nice and look out for all the good truck drivers that deserve to be treated better not like garabage!! Roehl has many "Company" people that are making postings on here denying everything and making them sound great and if that is what you want to believe go ahead, I know from personally knowing many of their present and former drivers. Besides all that Roehl gets government funding, alot of our taxpapers money!! This is very true, while the owners of Roehl have mansions, private jet, etc. So go ahead and go there if you want, you can believe all the lies but eventually you Will see and then you will be the one bashing them.
