To the OP:
Welcome to the industry. You can take Werner out of your post and replace it with CRE, Prime, Swift, Covenant, etc and your rant will still hold ground.
1st, you aren't going to get a brand new truck as a student/rookie driver. This is true with any mainstream OTR company you drive for. The ONLY way to get a brand new truck is to lease or buy one.
2nd, what were you waiting at the terminal for? Parts? Welcome to the industry. Be glad Werner doesn't have any Volvos. You'd be down for at least a week.
3rd, complaining about resets in BFE? Welcome to the industry. Layovers are part of the job. Do what I did and buy a TV, Xbox, and a laptop. I don't care where I get laidover at. As long as they have a bathroom, I'm str8.
Did I say werner sucks?

You will read posts and talk to different drivers and recruiters. And I have to agree what has been posted you almost have to start with a big company to get experience. I am a student right now and have had Werner and Swift both send me pre hire letters. Although I have not decided where I am going yet, I know what to expect for at least the first 6 months to a year.
-
What does THAT mean....what does that MEAN?!?
-
1rst, Werner gives brand new trucks to brand new drivers daily, just not every brand new driver.
2nd, Just do not go to the terminal, and Werner has lots of Volvos.
3rd, If you enjoy getting yourself str8 with the TV, Xbox, and laptop in the bathroom, more power to you. None of these things are for me though, and neither are layovers.
4th, If you are not making money it will be hard to buy these things anyway.
5th, Is the grade my neighbors kid is in. -
1st, not in my case. The trucks I drove with Werner had over 500,000 miles on them.
2nd, you don't have a choice if you're a company driver. You take the truck where the company wants you to take it.
3rd, then find yourself another job. Layovers are part of the job, like it or not.
4th, Nope. My TV, Xbox, and computer costs $600 all together, including the inverter. Add another $200 for my fridge and microwave. If you can't afford that, then you're doing something wrong. I currently net $1200 a week as a company OTR driver. The key is to not buy your electronics at a truck stop as they are a rip off. Go to places like Walmart or Best Buy.
5th, LOL -
1rst, Not that it really matters, but when did you drive for Werner? They do not run many trucks that have over 500k. They have some now, but still not running a lot with those miles. They used to be sold of long before that mark but they are keeping some longer now.
2nd, You always have choices, not all of them will leave you with a job, but you do have choices. Of the 10+ times I have been told to take truck to the terminal for required services it has been there once.
3rd, I will find another job if layovers are frequent as I do not like them and they are not part of my job. I have not had one in the past 3 years.
4th, Yes you can get an xbox a very small cheap tv and a bottom of the line computer for $600 at walmart. Not sure about an inverter too but who cares? With the problems the OP said he is having hew would not make that in a month at werner. If he is trying to support a family or has a home I doubt that buying these things to be able to play while not making money is a big priority.
5th, is still the grade my neighbors kid is in, with any luck that will move to 6th next year.
Now just a question or two and please do not get offended as I am just curious.
1rst, In this thread you say you net 1200 a week as a company driver, Then a little later in the day in a different thread:
You say in this one you grossed $900 as a solo driver. I know pay changes weekly, but there is a very big difference in 1200 net and 900 gross. Both of these posts were made within a 24 hour period, not weeks apart.
2nd, I realize that it has been nearly 6.5 months since you posted this:
and things do change, so I was just wondering if you are still a lease op, or if you have just switched to the company side. -
It happens everyday in the meat business. Companies like Tyson will impose a $400 fine on the company if they are late. The company turns around and fines the driver.
The shipper sets the appointment and it's on the bills. They expect you at the plant 10 hours before the load comes out so you are ready to run.
This is all fine and dandy in their world. Half the time you have to finish your previous load and are LATE dispatched on the next one where you can't get your 10 in.
I know, just tell them you can't do it. Okay, go to the truck stop, you're on the back of the list because there are two other drivers in the same area waiting. If you are lucky, you might get a load tomorrow night.
It's either that, or go pick the load up and we'll get you a repower. You get the load and the repower never happens. There's no one around. I know, then tell them well I can't deliver on time, reschedule delivery. Okay, you took the load. Now you get $400 taken out of your check. The customer might even refuse the load because it's late.
Meat has a two week shelf life. The customer only has about 10 days to sell it. You take away 1 day, you cost the customer 10% in sales.
So if you operate like this, you're lucky to make $20K and they won't keep you long. Play their game, you'll make $50K.
Not every job is like the one you have. In fact, most are different. For the most part, most are legit. Ones like Tyson are legit and pass the problem loads off on contractors. It's those type carriers that run the way they do for the all mighty dollar. When many of them loads pay $3- 3.30 a mile, you see why they are in the game. -
I wanna work for your co. You dont net $1200 a week.Werner dont have many volvos .And werner sucks.Keep your co a secret or you,ll have hundreds of drivers appyling.Just a keyboard cowboy.
