Wow, I really don't know what to say. This wasn't a blind corner on some backwoods road. Roehl absolutely 100% should have been able to avoid this. I doubt he even saw the mini-van before impact.

Hard to judge something, (or someone) without having ALL of the facts, isn't it?

Sure it is the driver's responsibility to be operating safely. But until all the facts are known, seems to me like it's pretty hard to judge. Who is to say that some other outside influence did not have something to do with this?

NOTE: I'm not defending anyone here. Just making an observation.

Terrible is all i can say this is less than 45 mins from my house. That stretch of 80 has alot of deer activity, especially during hunting season because of all the woods. I am sure most of you know but up here and in Illinois, and most of Michigan there are a ton of stories like this every year because of Deer running across the road. I hit one earlier in the year with my TT in Illinois and will tell you no matter what you think you would do, it is alot harder not to jerk the wheel than you think. I fortunatly was able to keep my wit and not jerlk the wheel but I have saw so many people panic and almost kill themselves trying to avoid them. I know that is not the situation here but just trying to help all of us stay aware. God Bless

While you might very well be right in your assessment I would wait till the authorities do their investigation before assigning blame. I don't tailgate, I try to stay back. I have had many times where I have had near misses because of a sudden stop in the road ahead. Every time this happens I try to adjust my following distance. If its dark and there are no brake lights even if the driver is following all the rules it's still possible he will strike the vehicle ahead if said vehicle comes to a sudden stop. Again happened to me on the NY throughway near Marcy NY. I dang near hit a car. It was dark no moon out a car had stalled in the road ahead and I came within a few feet of hitting it. I was not speeding or tailgating and if I had not been paying close attention I would most likely have killed someone in that car.

You're right, of course. But try as I might I cannot come up with a scenario where the driver did everything right and still hit the mini-van with that much force. Not that fits the admittedly few details I can get from the news articles anyway.

I love how some people are so quick to blame the truck driver even before all the facts are in.

It does appear that he swerved to avoid them but with no lights on the van, I'm sure it was to late to avoid.

Also, why in the hell were there 10 people in a minivan that only seats 7? Why was nobody, including the infant buckled in for safety?

I pray for all those involved and hope the driver pulls through emotionally. He's young and I'm sure pretty shook up from the tragedy.
