Looks like I'll be moving to eLogs pretty soon. I'm not familiar with some of the capabilities and what I'm asking about may vary by carrier so I'll ask anyway.

I avoid per-diem and itemize at the end of the year. I used my paper log books to summarize my days away/at home for figuring meal allowance. Also, I understand you would maybe have to produce documentation (log books) in the event of an audit ...

Can or do carriers provide some sort of printed recap or summary or detailed accounting (on a weekly or monthly basis) that they will provide to the driver upon request that can be kept and filed away for future reference? What if they refuse to provide this paper documentation to the driver(s), and subsequently refuse to cooperate with the IRS in the event of a driver audit 3 years later?

Do eLogs (driver not having old signed paper log documentation) protect the carrier in the event of a pay issue that may arise?

Please don't tell me the driver should maintain a written log book IN ADDITION to eLogs to protect himself!

Just have them downloaded to you or mailed to you each month.

As a follow-on question. Has anybody had a carrier who wanted to be "difficult" about providing written eLog data to the driver on a consistent basis? To my way of thinking, I would think a carrier would HAVE to provide these to the driver as a matter of law whether the driver wants them or not. Am I correct or incorrect?

Hi guys and gals out there - wife is an Enrolled Agent (IRS super tax preparer, also an MBA). Email any questions you have, she will research and answer as needed. I am just a wannabe, going to CDL training next week - wish me well...
