Another one real good at quoting their betters, short on cognitive function. So you like your buddy deny any authority over public roads?
That must be your belief or you would answer the very simple question posed instead of reciting tired talking points.
Do you know the letter that quote came from? Oh I'm sure you'll google it and have a fine answer. Does not pertain to the least to this discussion.

You've been-----\/\/\/\-----Thunderstruck!!!THBatMan8 Thanks this. -
As I said, the only way to make roads 'safe' is to take the human element out of driving, or take vehicles (all vehicles) off the road. You can pass as many laws and regulations you want. That isn't going to do anything. People are still going to talk/text and drive.
-
Since people still drink screw dui laws?
Since most have no sense of self-preservation equipment and speed limits should go?
Since peoples time is more important than others all traffic flow devices should be shelved?
Since billy big rigger believes he can drive coast to coast non stop we should let him?
That's the exact same argument your giving about phone usage.
There are many places the government has stuck it's little rat fudge nose it doesnot belong. My retirement, government schools, health insurance(and no not the latest dog and pony show all of it), medical treatments, business practices, drug use, feeding the feeble minded, and last but not least what someone wants to do for intimate relations!
And no happily married for 15 years. Though we have been married near tweenty five (insert rim shot). -
If we did not have speed limits then everyone would be driving around with their foot on the floor. We have speed limits in place and they do work to some extent. Alot of people still speed but for the most part they are not normally traveling at much more the 10-15 above the limits.
Drinking and driving laws also work to an extent, Sure you have some idiots that don't follow them but they usually get caught.
I agree that there are many many more distractions for drivers on the road. Cell phones are just another distraction and a distraction that is causing 2600 or more deaths each year and 300,000+ injuries each year. I don't see that figure going down either.
Heck, back when I was pulling cars around the country, I had one girl try to run into the side of my trailer while she was passing me. She was eating a dam bowl of cereal doing 10 over the limit and driving with her knee. I understand that sometimes eating and driving are a nessasary evil also but a bowl of cereal. I might eat a sandwich or something but never something that requires the use of both hands.
I also understand that to some, the cell phone is a nessasary evil, meaning we need to have it and need to beable to use it while driving SOMETIMES. I get calls on my phone when I am driving, The boss or the scale girls will call me to tell me my load has changed or has been cancelled. I recognize these numbers and will usually field the call when it comes in unless I am rolling through a larger town with traffic. I keep it short and get off the phone. I am not one for chatting for hours and hours on the phone anymore. Heck, people call me at home and I will ignore the call, as I hate talking on the phone.
I would bet that sidracted driving is the number 1 cause for the majority of the accidents on our roads. Things need to be done to remove atleast some of these distractions from the equation. Simple banning is not going to help especially for cell phone use. People will always find away so that johnny law won't see them using their phones. There is no real way to stop it with out having phones that will dissable themselves in a moving vehicle.
Hands free devices are not always the ticket either. While some think they can multitask or maybe they have computer type brains which enable them to multitask. The fact is that the the you are in the minority if you can actually multitask. -
Wow rat, you've went from "never" to "sometimes ".
One day you will be a Jedi..
I have faith ... -
What do you mean, I went from Never to Sometimes????
I could live without being able to use my cell while driving. If my boss and the scale girls knew that phones did not work while in a moving vehicle then maybe they would plan things better and not need to call me thus I would not have to field their calls at all.
Like I have said before, before I even think about answering my phone, I look at what is going on first. If there is any traffic then I let it go to voicemail and wait till the time is right to call them back. When running the slab, there many opportunities to do call backs. Find a pull off/ get off or whatever, get off the road and out of traffic and make the call. Simple as that.
I don't chat on the phone. I used to but I don't anymore. I don't feel the need to chat when driving. No not even to stay awake. If I am that tired that I need to chat to stay awake then I take a nap or pull over and do a walk around of the truck. What I do is what I do. If phones are made to not work while moving then I could live with that. I went for years were the only time I could talk on a phone was while standing close to it with a cord attached to it. Oh god, how did I ever survive!?!?!?!?Tazz Thanks this. -
I read this whole thread while driving down the road... but don't worry, I never talked on the phone once.
TachItUp, corneileous, papa1953 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Where did I say the laws were pointless? Stop putting words in my mouth.
If you ban cell phone usage all together, you might as well ban everything else that doesn't pertain to driving which can lead to distractions. Such as all radios, eating, etc. CB's are obsolete anyway.Wiseguywireless Thanks this. -
