    I don't think I've seen this bridge personally, but I'm curious about the whole setup.

    Mainly I'm wondering if there is a truck turn around at this site? Or is it a situation where you're coming up on this thing and you're stuck having to back up?

    As for previous incidents I've seen low bridge signs at night time where all you see is 2 flashing yellow caution lights but the sign itself is dark.

    I know this place! Funny I wonder why he thought his 13foot vehicle would fit under 11foot 6? He never even slowed down to check and see for sure, you can tell by the damage.

    I mentioned this before, but...

    When you get out of training you might end up doing a few runs to NY. One odd thing you'll notice is how bridge clearances there are often marked up to a whole foot lower than what they really are (for example, you'll see a bridge marked as being 12'6" but see local trucks with 13'6" trailers passing under them with ease). It's a very common practice in NY but I'm still not sure why it's done (I've heard everything from snow clearance to measurements taken from the shoulder instead of the pavement).

    In fact, it's such a common practice there that a driver could easily be fooled into thinking that the 1 foot variance will apply to all bridges there. If you find yourself driving in NY then DO NOT ASSUME THIS IS TRUE!!! There are just as many cases in NY where the clearance sign actually means what it says. The best course of action is usually to assume the clearance sign is actually correct until proven otherwise. Sort of what this guy should have done.

    I lived in NY most of my life. Yea, most of the bridges were always marked 1' LOWER but not all of them.
    The 2 CDL schools I attended in NY State were both unable to tell me the reason for this.
    The best bet we came up with was for snow clearance.

    There is a RR bridge in Brockport NY that used to get hit at least once a week on RT.19. They were always filled with frozen vegetables for Birdseye foods. I lived about a block away and every time I heard a loud bang I would run out there and sure enough there would be veggies all over the road and a trailer looking like a sardine can. LOL

    I noticed the article mentioned previous hits involved drivers following gps. Really? Do we have drivers that believe as long as they follow gps, no need to read signs?

    Thanks for askin, The stop sign before the bridge on 1 side is about 300 ft away. You can make a right and get back on a 4 laner. At that stop sign your on an incline lookin down at the bridge and the bottom of the bridge is about waist line high from the drivers seat. Just plain crazy

    On the other side you can make a right at the bridge.
