I believe it's your standard car GPS...or none at all. And following that like a robot. No common sense nowadays. Sure, I have a car GPS in my truck, but I don't follow the thing like it's Scripture. And never will.

How much better are the GPS units they sell for trucks compared to the ones for cars for this sort of thing? Are they much more accurate at telling the drivers not to go down this road because of a low bridge?

If they can't read a simple height sign then how in the hell can they read a map? Trip planning must be a special circle of hell.

Is this becoming a thing for drivers who want out of the industry to do?

When i first started driving, I came up on one of those small town, 12'6" NY Bridges and I stopped right before it. Traffic wasn't too happy, but I wasnt moving. Finally an officer, on is way to work, showed up and motioned me through! Snow clearance was the reason for the mislabeled sign, I was later told.

Depending on the unit, they can be fair to excellent.
I use a Rand McNally and it is excellent. In most cases, it won't even recognize a road exists if there is a clearance (or weight) problem.
I left a TS in New England one morning and asked directions to an interstate ramp. They told me, "left out of the TS and about a half mile down the road."
Off I went, then suddenly my GPS started Flashing, "Low Clearance Ahead".
I came to a stop and saw an 11-6 bridge and was cussing the directions when I realized the on ramp was BEFORE the bridge.
    But the GPS warned me.
Regardless, they are not infallible. ALWAYS keep your eyes open and read the signs!
