I have read a lot of the posts about the problems with cat c-15 and I have 1 that is the biggest peice of junk I have owned in 27 years! 333,000 miles and its in the shop again for blown head gasket on # 4 cylinder. I'm on my 4th air compressor, have lost the turbo studs 3 times, the studs in the IRV valve train, truck averages 3 miles to the gallon loaded and empty, has NO power and won't run until its over 180 degrees water temperature. I have changed fuel filters 3 times in one day! run only cat filters, change oil between 10,000 and 12,000 miles.Got rid of cat convertor after warranty. Last head gasket cost me $4000 dollars and now cat sats they will pay for 1/2 parts and no labor. Only 60,000 miles since last repair. Thoughts on this issue?

Get rid of it and buy a truck with a "real motor" in it...Cat hasn't built a good engine since the 1693 went away.

Seriously though....Maybe you ought to contact MR Haney because he seems to be able to make those yellow boat anchors run better.

    What year model motor?
You have a truck with 330000 miles on it and 60000 miles ago it had a head gasket blow out? If thats the case it would still been under warranty from CAT and after the repairs the new head gasket would have a 100000 mile warranty from that point on.
Sound to me like your getting your work done at a stealership and not at a CAT shop.
We had a company truck that was 45000 miles out of warranty and had head gasket and liner issues and CAT cover half the parts and the shop discounted the labor.
CAT dont make air compressors Bendix does so I dont know why you have went thru that many.
As far as the rest of your problems, most of us have done went thru it fixed it and moved on.

Had my head gasket done 3 times under warranty. If they has cut the counter bores on the first one that would have been to only one. There are two updates available for the air compressor to stop the fitting from blowing out of the head. And to make it stop blowing up air dryers.
I solved the turbo bolt problem by replacing the exhaust manifold with a Bully Dog aftermarket manifold. It used big ### ARP studs and I've had no problems with that since.
I also added a Bully Dog programmer and a Duralite air to air. I went from 3.5 mpg to 5.5 mpg. And you won't catch me in the hills. I've got 625 hp. Hitting the road through three axles.
I had all those problems. Nothing patience and money can't fix! Good luck!

I took my compressor to a machine shop and had the hole tapped to 3/4 pipe fitting solved that problem. Haven't heard of one blowing out the air dryers.

Hello HaulingHeavy and welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear about your problem Cat. I am a "moderately"(?) loyal Cat owner. I have had fairly good luck with 'em. 5EK dropped a liner at 706K and that is the worst story i have out of the two i have experience with (5EK,2WS).
Not being a smartazz here, but maybe a different mechanic would help?
Whatever you do, best wishes to you...:biggrin_25514:

C-15 is vague. 6NZ MBN BXS What kinda motor are you talking here. I personally have had great luck with Cat. There always are the exceptions to the rule. I think maybe a mechanic change might not be a bad idea. Somtimes the small shop works harder to keep a good reputation than the shop with a branch in every state.

    Just something to think about.

Since no one has said it the liner protrusion needs checked, one of them is not set right, it will keep blowing gaskets until that is fixed.

Cat does sell reman bendix compressors, I believe they are painted black or yellow, always go for a green one from a regular dealership, they are of better quality.

For every one person that bad mouths a cat, there are 10 more that have never had a lick of trouble with them.

I agree, they all have they're issues. Blackw900 swears by his N14 but the one I had was a POS but I'm not going to say they're all junk.
