What are the essential tools that every truckers should carry in their toolbox ? Want to get as many as my ducks as possiable in a row before going away to school. So I was wondering what I should throw together in a tool box before I leave. I'm no mechanic, but after all these years I have picked up a little bit of mechanical abilities. Looking forward to hearing from you all.

It depends on what you are doing. I carry many tools, but the most important thing I carry is a long log chain, we go to some pretty nasty places in the dark, and so far I have been able to be pulled out without a tow truck if I misjudge something, I also pull others out. I carry a 4 lb. engineer's hammer to check tires and beat on stubborn pins. I carry some clear duct tape and cable ties, and lots of straps.

If you are pulling trailers with rotary pin cams, older trailers mostly, you can carry a big pipe wrench to help turn the cams. I carried a pin puller for the straight pull ones. I keep a couple of retired meat hooks for pulling the fifth wheel lock. I carry WD40, ether, a glad hand hose , a professional tire guauge, some screwdrivers, a small metric socket set, glad hand ends and seals, a couple of lights for trailers. A voltage detector, most of the electrical things I try to fix are mechanic's jobs and that saves me from trying to fix something I can't. I carry a torx bit set. I haven't found much use for hex keys lately.

I used to carry tire plugs, but quit because most of the tires I had fail were way beyond plugging.
