If I am in a good mood I will tell them they have 5 minutes to come up with the most creative story that they can. The more entertained I am the more they get. I have had several tell me stories so funny I was laughing for days. If I am in a bad mood I just tell them I don't carry cash. Then I ask if they take American Express. I know that most of those guys are just wanting beer or drug money but you never know which one that comes up to you really does need the help. A few dollars doesn't really mean all that much to me. But it could be the reason someone else goes hungry.

Try Center City Philly, they are all over the place and very aggressive all the time. I live in South Philly and they are all over the exit ramps, they each take turns with the same signs and they are all drunk or high. Add in the "flash mobs" committed by "groups of youths" on a regualr basis here, hell I need to get back out on the road I think I'm safer in the truckstops....

When I was stuck in that Nashville flood a homeless guy with a dog approached me. He asked me for money, that his dog was hungry.

I told him I didn't have any money but I gave him a can of dog food.

I didn't think until afterwards. Maybe I should of gave him a fork. :biggrin_25520:

The guy that approached me was drunk as a skunk. He kinda surprised me,open sores, and a bandaid hanging half off his face:biggrin_25513:
Very uncomfortable moment, and the guy was very sketchy.I was thinking maybe it would turn out badly for one of us.He was mentally unstable in my opinion.Sux to have to contend with that while trying to work a 14 hr day.Ive lived a sheltered life:sad5:

I usually give them $5 and tell them "what you do with this is between you and god, I have done my good deed" and they usually say thank you and walk away.

Once on the S. Side of Chicago I was unloading at a hospital and a guy came up to me asking for $5 to take a shower atthe YMCA. All I had was a $20 but I have it to him. To my surprise he came back an hour later later with wet hair and $15 change, so not all of them are scum bags

This country used to take care of the mentally ill. There were all kinds of facilities to do so. Unfortunately, there was also a tremendous amount of abuse and cruelty that went on inside them. There were also cases of people being manipulated into an institution by their family, so the family could take over the money.

But for the most part, these facilities did a tremendous amount of good, all over the country. Most of these places maintained a clean facility and kept the inmates fed and cared for. Their physical health was cared for too.

Then the liberals decided that these people needed to be given their "freedom" to roam the streets, starve and freeze to death. ####, we sure have come a long way as a society, haven't we?????

    well it depends.
I remember seeing I young clean cut guy holding a sign out that said " Anything Will help" now I was pulling off the highway going to the truck stop.
a little later that young man walked over to the truck stop and was sitting outside with his back pack and a gallon jug of water this was back in the early summer. It was hot out I was in the south east U.S..
I was eating inside the truck stop seen the young guy sitting out there and was not making much either working for swift.
But I walked out and just handed him a two fives to help him out.

and every now and then I will do that.

well I remember when I was younger when Regan came into office and economy was bad and I was out of work and had to ruff it for a little bit due to the bad economy.

Oh and when you see a old guy down on his luck, they are not all drunks and rejects. lets see should I eat today or buy razzes and shave.
I mean think about it how many old guys over say 45 due you know that have all there teeth and all there hair that worked hard there whole lives and also have baby skin with no wrinkles and there parents are alive at what 80 years old to help them out.

Yeah I've seen some lowlifes and I've seen some that were really in need.

Had a guy once ask me if I could get him a sandwich, said he hadn't ate in a couple of days. Got him a couple of dogs and a bottle of water. Guy had tears in his eyes as I gave them to him. He thanked me and went on his way.

During the winter,my church participates in a shelter program where we feed and give a meal to 10 homeless men and a cot to sleep on overnight.I volunteered to drive the men a few times in the church van from the shelter to our church.I delivered the men to our church at 7 PM and returned them to the shelter at 7 am the next morning. My wife came with and we ate supper with them a few times.I got to know one of them (nicknamed the professor) ,he was given early retirement after 20 years with the postal service I guess because he developed a drinking problem. His entire pension check went to support his kids,so he lived in the shelter .He had a cell phone and told me that he couldn't stand doing nothing all day so he always was lining up handyman type jobs to keep himself occupied. Any way he told me (when the others weren't around) that the other 9 guys were just plain lazy and wouldn't take a job if it was given to them. They enjoyed being bums and doing nothing but hangout with each other all day every day. They had a place to sleep and free food, believe it when I tell you, those guys ate better than I do.I'm going to drive that church bus again this winter, just to see how my friend "the professor" is doing.
When I get hit up for change by homeless people,I direct them to that shelter the Good Shepherd Mission in Paterson NJ.
