Figured I would go ahead and intro myself...name's Brendan. I live in O'fallon, MO and I'm currently in the "training" phase with Werner for the Dollar General account out of Fulton, MO. I'll be testing out and getting assigned a truck within the next couple weeks.
To make a long story short, I've been on my own for the last five-ish years and I've been homeless twice in the past. I came from working few garbage minimum wage hourly jobs, and scraping the bottom of the barrel to eat and keep my bills paid. My home is a falling-apart 35y/o mobile home which I have to put several thousand dollars into to make it nice, I have over $10k in debt at age 22 (quite an accomplishment lol), I have a Ford truck that needs a ton of work, etc. You get the idea.
Finally something snapped and I stepped back and decided it was long past due that something change. I needed a career instead of just a job, and didn't have the time or patience to go to college. I took classes at MTC in Hazelwood, MO and now here I am.
No major complaints so far though, other then I never realized how ignorant most drivers are until I started doing this.
Cheers!

Welcome to the nuthouse, Brendan.

Welcome to TTR, Brendan! Glad to hear you are well on your way to getting back on track. I know Werner has a bad rap on this site, but I have heard many good things from a few drivers I have met who have had a DG dedicated acct.
As for the career/life change... I too have little patience for the "higher" education system. I was lucky enough to receive a quality primary education, so the whole college thing is a bit redundant for me as I do not aspire to become a doctor/lawyer/scientist. Trucking is not for everyone, but for the few who can tolerate & even enjoy it, it's a decent way to pay the bills.
Now that you are earning some money, make sure you have more coming in than going out. Also, try to pay off your debt ASAP so you aren't paying all that interest to the bank. Once you are debt free, build up an emergency fund (6 mos worth of income/expenses). I'm sure you've heard all of this before, but it really is some of the best advice I have been given.
Good luck in your new career & hope to see you around!
Oh, and not all truckers are ignorant... You'll find quite a few smart ones on this site... Their grammar and spelling can be atrocious at times, but don't judge them by that! -
Thanks for the welcomes guys
I actually am enjoying it so far at least. My childhood best friend's dad was a OTR truck driver for 20+ years before a heart problem made him come off the road, and he would tell me stories as a kid. I've always had this in my head as a possible career choice. There are aspects that suck, but that's the case in every industry and for the most part I think being able to make a living doing something that you can enjoy overall, is worth a lot. I can also say truthfully for the first time in years that I'm confident about my future.
I was more referring to idiots in four wheelers that don't understand we open up that gab for a reason, we make wide turns, etc...I wasn't even aware of certain aspects of road courtesy involving trucks until I started driving them. Most people just don't understand or care it seems. Although I have seen a few other truck drivers who are just as bad...I've had a bit of trouble with Prime Inc. and FedEx drivers so far. -
Good luck with the new career. I was accepted to Werner for the same account, but a day before calling the recruiter back I got a call from a local company that seems to be a better fit for me. The DG account sounds like fun, you know the whole tailgate unload part.
I like to work so it would have been a good fit for me. Just keep a positive attitude and go with the flow!

That's awesome!
Oh, I see now... Learning to drive a truck has caused me to correct some bad habits I have developed while driving my 4-wheeler - gap, signals, PATIENCE, etc...
Lol! It's bad enough dealing with those guys while in a 4-wheeler, much less 18!
