at the last week we did some kind of analisis how LAA Actros was rolled over after car to steer wheel crash. And after that I did some research and now I know that it is very dangerouse when car hits steer axe. Tie rods may easily be bent ore broken. After collision of Mazda vs Actros, Mazda driver got minor injury, of cource car engine compartment was damaged really hard, but Actros rolled over with trailer.

So I tried to find car to steer axe accidents cought on camera and yes, the same with different trucks, cabovers and conventional ones.

    Well, two spectacular examples:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEoKxne7-E0&feature=related[/ame]

car hits old cabover in left steer wheel and bents tie rod. Driver lost control but got it a second later and avoided crash on oncoming lane.

There was crazy gipsy famaly in car, driver did not see all becouse dust and he was crazy tring to pass other cars. Of course overspeeding, seems to me about 75 mph ore may be more. Fortunatly they were not killed...

The other scare example of Dallas pepsi trucks crash.

The same like with LAA actros.

Amazing how little it takes. I remember seeing the Pepsi crash and we were all surprised how easily it jumped over the barrier.

I've seen a couple where the car hits the drive axles and jackknifes the truck. I just hope that if that ever happens to me I'll be too injured to get to the idiot that hit me before the cops get there.

Yep, stupid drivers do it. really stupid, but I try to be cool after the accident and I do record all happens after with cellphone ore with road camera. sometimes stupid peope keep doing stupid things after accident

both the accidents were really stupid, especially with speeding car, stupid driver who do passing in dusty road, he tried to avoid rear end crash and hit semi in steer wheel.... fortunatly tie rod was bent but not broken and driver used the chance to avoid secondary collision ore roll over crash with 30 000 kg in trailer....

The pepsi truck driver was not so lucky.... Bariers did not help

I've also seen entire steer axles taken right out from under long hoods, its funny they can't build these things a little better so the steer axles don't take so much damage in accidents. A guy I know that drives for a small local company up here was in a Western Star 4964EX and a Buick went head on with him at highway speed, the steer axle broke off, swung around, and left a perfect indentation of all ten lug nuts in the side of the fuel tank. Trucker wasn't hurt though, but I still can't imagine having no ability to steer the truck, imagine this scenario happening on a high bridge...

It's weight savings. To reinforce the axle enough, you'd have to use a lot of very heavy, high grade steel.

yeah, and as I can see the same situation with European, US, Russian and Asian semis!!!

all they get steer axe damaged in this kind of accidents, involving other vehicles in this disaster.

Even a motorcycle can cause major damage by hitting the steer axle. In one case here locally motorcycle came into the dump trucks lane coming around a sharp curve and hit the truck right on the driver side wheel. Driver of dump truck lost steering and ran into embankment and totaled truck. The other incident I saw the other day was a lady in a van got on i44 at exit 4 here in Joplin going the wrong way and hit a semi right in the driver side it pushed the steer axle back underneath the sleeper of the truck. That truck was horribly totaled but he kept it right side up and without hurting any other cars. Don't know about the lady in the van but it looked bad.

This is what I figured, and it makes sense, but you would think there would be some way they could make it to where you wouldn't lose the steering so easily. How do designers figure its ok and safe to lose steering on a vehicle that weighs an average of 80,000lbs?

one more scare video from Russia...
    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WDPKkpqsTc[/ame]

steering box and brake valve were damaged in collision with cars. Truck kept running till lost air with leak and stoped with spring brakes. It is '00 Freightliner and there was trailer hand brake under steering wheel. Driver was shoked with accident and tried to stop truck, that lost control till both the buttons poped up.

    Four were killed in cars.
