So, I've gotten 2 prehire letters (Today was my first day of class). 1) U.S. Express, and 2) Star Trans (Morton IL). I hope to recieve a couple more as I submit apps, but am curious about these 2.
I have heard good and bad about US, and more bad then good about Star.
I am paying my way through a non-company connected CDL school, so I have no commitments. Thanks for the help!

As far as school, I did the same thing as you. I don't know anything about Star, but I have met drivers who drove for USX at some point, and they spoke well of the company. I understand USX uses auto-shift trucks.
Congrats on taking the first step! Keep your options open, as you have plenty of time left to choose companies. I tripled the # of companies interested in me during my 4 week CDL course. I ended up going with a company that I found, rather than one that found me. I did not commit to orientation until the last day of class (Friday), and I was in orientation the following Monday. Good luck! -
I don't know anything about US. I went with Star Transport right after I got my CDL. I personally liked the trucks. I got a 387 Pete with a 13spd and Cat Motor. Company wise they pay the standard $350 per week during training before taxes. Once I got on my own they paid me $0.28 per mile starting out. Back then they were still running CAT hard and heavy so I was getting 2600 miles per week. When they started loosing the CAT loads to Louisiana my miles went to crap so I had some words with Bob and left. Overall if I had to do it over I would still choose to Drive for Star Transport at the beginning of my trucking career. Good luck whatever you do.

Keep in mind that "pre-hire" is nothing more than a little invitation for you to apply....has nothing to do with "hiring"!
-
In my case, I received 1 pre-hire letter that was just an invitation to apply. The other pre-hires were earned. While they did not check out my background 100%, they did check my MVR, references, and employment history. They also ensured that I met their minimum hiring qualifications. I view pre-hire letters as certifying that one has been pre-vetted; they are a good indicator of what chance you have of possibly being hired by that company, but nothing is certain until you are in a truck...Last edited: Nov 7, 2011

I know it's just a piece of paper, but it does make me sit a little easier knowing I (most likely) have at least one option after I graduate. I think USX would be more up my alley, from those 2. Thanks for a the help!

You have more options than you think. It all depends on how you go about looking.

Got another pre-hire in this morning when class started. Boyd Bros. They sound pretty good, the flatbedding aspect is interesting, but a lil intimidating
