Suicide is a term used among flatbedders to tell which way a coil is setting on the trailer.
A suicide coil means the coil is setting on the trailer in a way the if it came loose while getting on the breaks it would roll into the the truck.
A shotgun coil has the eye long ways with the trailer and would roll off the side
A eye to the sky has the coil standing on its end with the eye up.

You do not use chains on aluminum coils...straps only. Three straps for each coil and then a securement around each of the coils at the base where it sits on the skid.dieselgrl Thanks this. -
Hey OpenRoad, you put a center strap as well as your "X", right? Also make sure you either trip chain or trip strap the skids they're sitting on. Here's where a mudflap comes in handy to pad the coil surface. Put the first one hand tight, and the rear one tighter and then check the front one again. They don't have to be killer tight, just snug.
You guys do realize it's more helpful to someone new to offer him suggestions as to how to make it better than to just tell him he's wrong, right?
Oh, and straps are not the problem - a 4" synthetic web strap has a higher WLL limit than most of the chains a company will run. Each to their own - I only pull my chains down when I have to. -
Since when do you not use chains on aluminum coils? This must just be your company policy? If so its stupid and dangerous!
I hauled aluminum in all shapes and forms and never had an issue with using chains. I'd use straps occasionally but only if it was gonna make my job easier.volvodriver01 Thanks this. -
Whenever they make a strap that I can't cut with my pocket knife, then it will be worth using!
Besides, I've yet to cut thru a chain if it came loose and started rubbing on a sharp edge.volvodriver01 Thanks this. -
Perhaps not Les2, but that's what load checks are for...and padding. The same thing you need with chains to prevent load claims.
But when you eventually get on the road, you'll need to use straps. You won't get away with chains on aluminum. -

Aluminum coils that were chained.

Skidded aluminum coils chained....
So what was you saying about not using chains on aluminum?
BTW, I've probably hauled more aluminum than you ever will. Back in 09 I hauled nothing but coils, not one was steel.volvodriver01 Thanks this. -
Really????
Is that how they do it at Maverick?
######' amatures!
The bottom feeder flatbed fleets teach'em that ####....Trying to cut down on freight claims by drivers that don't know how to chain without wrecking everything!
Uhhh.....You're telling this to someone that's hauled more loads than you've ever even seen!
I better get a time machine and go back through the last 40 years and re-do all of the loads of aluminum coils that I have chained....
Where do you people come up with this nonsense?
You'll never get away with that!
Oh Les......You're just sayin' that 'cause it's true!
Hey! Are those "chinese" drive tires? They look "chinese"!Last edited: Nov 20, 2011
