Hey guys,
I have been into CB now for a couple of years and also have my ham license but have never had a radio set up as a base unit. I was just curious to your thoughts on this. I am going to get a Ranger 2950 radio with power supply from a friend of mine and will be using that as a base setup. I have never owned one but I know other people who have had the same radio before.
Right now, I'm planning on using something like a 102 whip for now until I eventually find a better antenna. I plan on running the coax to a bracket of some kind on the roof of my house. Just wondering about any thoughts or suggestions. I'm pretty excited because I have wanted to do this for a long time now. haha
Setting up a new base station...

Nothing wrong with a 2950 as far as a antenna you have a wide choice to choose from the A 99, IMAX 2000 ect since I go on many bands I run a R7
but they are not cheap ....
This is what my 10 meter station looks like .... 40-10 meter ant is on rightAttached Files:

If you are gonna use 10 and 11, I'd put up an imax 2000. They are a 5/8 wave and really broadbanded. If you get it through copper.com, you can get it around 100 bucks. If you get it through the Ham dealers, you may get ripped off.

My friend and I might get it set up tonight because it shouldn't take very long. I need to go pick up an antenna this afternoon along with some coax, but other than that I think it's just a matter of hooking everything up. I'll try to post some pictures or something.

Conditions are real good right now. After Christmas, I plan on getting an 11m base on the air. My wife says I have too many radios as it is..

By all means do it. You will find a base unit will allow you to talk much further than a mobile unit, depending on how high you can get your antenna.
However as for using a 102 whip for a base antenna.....that would work, except you will need to get some kind of metal under the antenna for a counterpoise. The best thing would be a sheet of metal that was 9 ft by 9 ft with the antenna dead in the center of it, insulated from the antenna. You might be able to get away with horizontally mounted pieces of metal bars that are 9 ft long on 3 sides of the antenna, sort of like a ground radial on the bottom of an antenna.
But as pointed out you might be better off spending $50 for an Antron 99 or $100 for an Imax 2000.
You will want to mount your antenna so the feed point is 30 ft off the ground. You should be able to communicate a long ways if you do it like this.
Keep an eye out for good deals. I recently sold a Shakespeare Big Stick I quit using for $30. it worked great on 11 meters and was about as good as an A99, so I am told. -
I got it halfway set up tonight. It is sitting on my grill outside. haha. It's working. I'm planning on putting it on the eve of the house tomorrow. Next on my list is getting a better antenna.

I was talking to a friend of mine on the CB today and the antenna that he suggested for this base station was a macon V-58? Anyone know anything about these?

Definitely go with an IMAX 2000 antenna. You won't be sorry.

What is the average size of an IMAX 2000? and what is the price range? I'm up for anything that will work. Right now, all I have is a steel whip. I'm about to get it on the roof tomorrow which i know will make a difference on reception and range but there are very many better options so whatever ya'll can tell me is a big help!!!
