Con-Way Freight is willing to offer me a job in their driver apprentice program starting out about $12 something per hour; anything over 8 hours is overtime and anything over 40 is overtime. After four months of traveling two hours each way to their training terminal and possibly working 14-hour days/nights, I would be permanently working at the terminal that is a little over an hour drive from my home and then making $18 plus per hour. On the flip side, UPS will be hiring package handlers part time (six hours a day) with full-time benefits and pays I think around $10-$12 per hour. They are located 45 minutes from home. Does UPS train drivers with no experience? Is it hard to quickly advance within UPS? Which is the better deal?

Con-Way Freight. It wouldn't take no time to be working the overtime hours and making very good money. Good way to get ahead. Just my $0.02 cents.

Ups package handler, as in loading or unloading trailers? Good luck with that. I did that for a little while in college. it was supposed to be 4+ hours per night. Shift started at 10 or 11 and never worked more than 2 1/2 hours. Unloading goal was 60 or so packages per minute if I remember correctly. It's been a while. Here at the Orlando hub, I had a few friends that stuck it out and drive the brown truck. It took them on average 7 years to get there from loading and unloading. I'd go with Conway over that all day long.

Which one would have the best benefits (pay/health/work environment) in the long run?

My buddy drives the brown truck and busts his butt all day long with no A/C in FL. The biggest if, is, will you ever get to that point as loading and unloading isn't easy and neither are the quotas. It's great they offer benefits at brown, but if your shifts are short, can you afford them? Your looking at years of part time at brown. In four months, you'll be making 18hr, FULL TIME, at Conway. That is a no-brainer.

brown has better pay down the line, better benefits, better internal advancement.

thats the reason so many people apply to be package handlers, only time i even got an interview was when i was young and they had 40 people in there to apply for that position.

id go conway though personally, too old to be hussling lifting 60 lb packages, heart attacckkkkk.

that is unless ups was hiring drivers in my area, its rare though and prly 2000 people apply.

Well, one would think. Here's some more information about the situation. Con-Way also is a no-AC environment as I would be a dock worker most of the time until I get a few years seniority under my belt, and there's also no heat on the open docks. The folks at Con-Way on this forum say that they also have to really bust their butt even though the money is good. It would take years to get to be a regular driver I think, although Con-Way does provide "free" training. I hear the benefits are better at UPS than Con-Way. As far as short shifts, that's okay as I already am self-employed and make way more money than $18/hour, but it's a gravy job, I'm tired of sitting all the time at a computer and would like to drive a truck for a change, not to mention have medical insurance (our family currently has none). UPS is also about 40 miles less of a commute per day round trip. However, I really haven't made up my mind. UPS may not train someone to drive, so if it takes $4000 out of pocket to learn to drive their trucks by attending a trucking school then that's a mark against UPS. Working for Con-Way and being trained by them would be like getting my cake and eating it too as far as the training goes. But, then again, if I can still do my IC job at home, work for UPS which is closer to home a few hours a day, get great bennies, and eventually drive one of their trucks...??? The folks at Con-Way say the benefits aren't so great either. Oh, what to do...:biggrin_2551:

Boonie I drive for UPS Freight.

If you go to UPS, it will take you YEARS to even get in a package car, the little brown trucks that everyone knows and loves. You will most likely have to do that for 5-10 years before you even have a chance at driving the "feeders".

    Go to Conway.
