knowing my average is of no use to you. like i said i am more concerened with being home these days than getting rich. gave.up on that dream long ago.
your in IL and im in TX. you will average way better than me just from your location. tyen it will depend on if you like to do long runs or short ones. i can average $3/mi by running 30 mi loads between houston and dayton tx. but my weekly net wont be as good or at least not any better. just too many variables, main one being you and how well you put loads together and how much you.want to work.
im 20+ yrs.in this business. always independant or small fleets. nobody could be.more scarred.of mega fleets than i was but pumpkins a good bunch of folks so far. sure there is some goofballs and they have some.funny ideas but theyre good.
last year i ran produce with my own wagon. ran minimun 800mi a day. i grossed a ton of moneh, way more than my gross here. but my net was.no.better and thats what counts. its not how much you make but rather how much you can keep.

I was looking at Landstar as a first choice and Schneider as a backup. Between the threads I've started that is beginning to reverse itself. I don't need to make a fortune to put money aside. I like the simplicity and straight forwardness of Schneider's system. Mainly I just want to see the load board, choose my own loads and get more per mile. As far as other people's numbers are concerned they can be very helpful if you understand the basics of their operation and that your numbers will be different. If driver A has a $2000.00 a month truck payment, but driver B has a paid off truck their numbers will be different by $2000.00 on that one expense alone. For me, I'm working on getting an idea of how Scheider will differ from where I am now.

well i will tell you that two of the guys i was in orientation with didnt last long. one lived in FL and if you know anything you know to stay out of florida unless its spring and you have a reefer. heck sni flat out told us to just stay out of fl and to stay north of houston in tx. in fact if you book a load into fl now they require you to book a load out. lots of guys were loading in and deadheading out. sni looks at the flow of trucks and finds loads to put on the board according to the truck volumes. i guess they got stuck with a bunch of loads in fl and nobody booked any. they ended up deadheading company trucks from ga to haul them cheap old loads.
the other guy best i could tell was always chasing the highest rates and like i saod before ue kept finding himeself in very cheap freight lanes. there is usually a reason if a load is paying drasticly more out of any uea. generally its going where there is no freight or extreamly cheap freight. so he'd end up sitting and usually still hauling for free to get out -
i think i stated that i average about $1.50/mi. loads out of tx are cheap. i am more concerned with being home and my trk payment is only $1000/mo. generally i take home $1200 a week just running tx to ok twice a week. im home every day and i only sleep in the trk twice a week.
i could definatly do better if i went up to the midwest and ran around. in fact i may just be doing that this month. i just failed my dot and i need to put 4 tires on to get it to pass. i need to replenish that money before christmass. been trying to not replace them as i have been trying to replace the trk but its looking like im going to be keeping it awhile now. -
I live by the philosophy of don't get yourself into a situation you can't get out of. I understand exactly what you are saying about the guys who didn't make it. If you need to make $1.50 a mile you need to make sure you average that over the course of a month. If you need 8000 miles a month to show a profit then you have to remember everyday you sit while on the road is one less day you can spend with the family. While you can't take just anything, you can't be too picky either.
As far as Florida and Texas, been there done that. The exception to the Florida rule for me is if my wife or especially my daughter is with me. In that case Orlando over to St. Pete becomes very attractive for a two or three day mini-vacation. Actually my wife would like to go towards the West. As for Texas I really don't like going south of Dallas. Like I said before, if I can make money running around close to home that's fine with me. It's just once in awhile I like to stretch the legs a bit on a longer run. -
sni isnt great getting west. once you get out there you end up running up n down ca cpast and its hard to get back east. you can get there out of tx pretty easily. there is almost no loads on the board for wa/or and utah is cheap. there is loads to western wy out of houston every week for good money. i wish i could find something ot there worth hauling back. ive spent the last two years running the northwest and southwest. i miss it sometimes

The thing you need to do is call and speak to Landstar's BCO Utilization or Recruitment, and do the same for Sni. Both seem from the outside and inside in LS' case to be good companies to pull for. It's totally up to you. The biggest thing you need to realize is as an O/O with either company, you and you alone decide how much money you make.
-
Not only do I realize it is up to me to run my business, that is why I am looking to make a change. I am researching before making my move, and please understand if I don't have a great deal of trust when it comes to recruiters. I want to hear what drivers have to say, both good and bad. I know what I'm looking for and will decide which company is best for my situation based on what I find out. The timing is also important and in the middle of the holiday season is definately the wrong time. Right now is the time for research.
Right now I am in a situation where dispatchers think they can run my business better than I can. Truth is they can dispatch 60 trucks better than me, but I can dispatch one truck better than them. As for where I run it's a simple formula. My daughter wants to go to Florida, my wife wants to go west and I want to go wherever the money is. -
you know the kinds of trucks they offer under the choice program. and what the price and payments look like.
