    to Vman73;

How is Sysco training going? Did you have a chance to touch a truck yet? Or you just polishing your dolly?

the training was great. I went out on Friday with my trainer, and did one of the routes I'll be doing. It was Kerrisdale area. The trickiest part of this route was backing into a loading area off of Arbutus Street , with 4 lanes of traffic in rush hour. I can see that on being a bit if a pain. Some tight back alleys off Main Street, and had to turn onto a residential street (with 30 ft trailer made some people give me weird looks lol), but it's all good.

We only had 6 stops. It was really good. Before we left, we had STS review (portable scanner), and went to truck, hooked up, did pre-trip, and hit the road. The truck I had, had GPS onboard the Xata, so that kinda helped I guess. We were done the route by 11. Monday morning I start at 4AM, and we are hitting the next part of my route, West Van, Nort Van.

It sounds like I'm going the be with my trainer for three weeks, which will take me past Christmas. It should be okay.

    Cheers! :biggrin_25526:

Looks like they improved a training program. 6 stops is really nothing, I would love to have a 6 stops a day. Up to 10 stops is OK, but 17 to 20 is kind of overkilling.
Definitely you will learn to back up trailer anywhere, that's good part of the job, I like a challenging backing. Training was awesome for me too, had lot of fun, very easy days. started at 4AM, done at 11AM, than we sit on truck stop and talk to other Sysco drivers. Sometimes truck stop was full of Sysco trucks only :-D.

I could fit a truck into places where I had just about 2" on each side, but sometimes you get stuck if somebody block you on parking lot and then stress builds up. You falling behind with deliveries, and than it only multiplies.

I would like to get your feedback after training is over to see the improvement. Those scanners is probably good help for drivers.

Vman word of advice like laci said ppl will block you in, at coca cola we delivered in a similar way to sysco. Use your cones to try and insure you have a way out when you may get blocked in or try to park in places that have more than one way out if you do get blocked.

Laci how about backing in to docks that you cant see blind side and down a hill through a door i had one of those its terrible.

I go in for day one tomorrow i cant wait.

Today, was day 2 on the road. 4am start. 7 stops. Yea, it's pretty easy so far, but they are increasing the stops day to day. By the end, my routes will have 12-14 stops on them. The first day we sat around and chatted at the United Blvd. Timmy's with another guy that was starting out the same day as me. That was neat. They told us not to get used to the down time, lol.

Yea, there are some tight spots, encountered some already today. C'est la vie...it will only make you a better driver and backer...

I should be with a trainer until around Christmas. I'm sure I'll be up to full stops by then. I may be singing a different tune by then haha!

They say it's no big deal if you fall behind, even 2, 3 or 4 hours. They just ask to call customer service so they can notify the customer. If it's real bad, they will send for help to ease some pressure off.

I'll definately keep you up to date...

for some reason I didnot have a problem backing into blind side, but once I had a backing problem after they send me to place, where dispatcher has notice Straight truck only, well I ask at the reception where they take a loads, was there first time, lady send me to go there, there is a huge door and go in.I asked her, I drive a semi, she replied it is OK, big truck go there all the time. Well, gate was wide and tall, but after I got in down to parkade, there was no way to get out. I was way too long and way too tall. Delivery took me about 2 hours, running with dolly all the way around, while I was blocking parkade at all. Then about another 2 hours backing out gaining an eights of an inch each move forward and back so i could get out . You wouldn't believe how happy I was to get out. It looked to call a forklift or something to pull trailer a side. Of course, no reception, nobody at Sysco dispatch to help.

After I gave a #### to dispatcher, they asked me why I did not have a straight truck or trailer with power gate and power walker....WHY? because I don't do dispatch.
Well, next day got 36 ft trailer, instead of 28 pop,not even half way loaded, with powergate.they send me to location where 28 maybe would be OK, but 36 way too long.Only 17 stops, 20 000 pounds. When power gate broke down.....#### happens.

    To EW2108:
Yeap, backing can be challenging some times, yes, I did something simmilar with 53' dry van with over 60000 Lb loaded...first time is always bad, than you find your path and everything goes better.

To Vman: they send you help if somebody is avaiable, or if you lucky to get somebody on the mike phone. It is no big deal for sysco taht you late, but you get #### from everybody waiting for your load. Then when your shift is 17 hours and you do not even take a lunch, but that 1 hour is taken off your paycheck anyway. than you drive home for another hour, and U sleep 8 consecutive hours prior to start your next shift next day at 4AM. So you get home at 11PM and wake up at 3...11-3 is 8 hahaha

Sounds like lots of fun! I think I would prefer not to deal with those challenges thanks.

I remember being on the highway and backing into all of those same kinds of tight places with a big bunk truck and a 53 or 48. I was also a yard man running a shunt truck for years, between that and doing city work with a W900L for 3 years, there isn't a backup situation that phases me anymore. Take your time and you'll always make it. If your really not sure, get out and check.

Sometimes you get that feeling in your stomach that there is something on your passenger side you just can't see, my advice, don't ignore your gut feeling. If you don't trust it, get out and check!
