The postings remind me of when I got my first driving job, way back in the late 80's when all you needed was a chauffer license that you could purchase for $20 and exchange your car license.
I went to a small owner with North American trucks leased on and told him I wanted to drive. He said, get in the Jimmy Astro and bobtail around the lot today-I did about 100 trips around the yard. The next day he had me hook onto a trailer and drive around the yard and back in-never watched me once as he spent all day everyday in the terminal. After doing this for 3 days, he sent me to Ft Wayne to get tested to driver for him and NA.
When we got to Ft Wayne, I went with a driver around 6-8 city blocks and backed up to a dock, the examiner (if you want to call him that) said go back to the yard. On the way back I shifted down from 6th to almost a stop, slid it into 3rd and crept across the lot. He said-thats good, you dont have to go through all the gears like the driving schools teach you-I asked him "what school"?
In 2 days I was on the road alone and the rest is history.
Those were the days....
