Hello everyone..First of all, I'm new on here and just want to introduce myself a little. First of all, I'm married, with kids, I'm at a dead end job, I'm a wannabe trucker and I'm from Lexington, SC

I have done a good bit of research on truck schools, and companies that offer CDL training and have come to realize that I think I have found out that there are no companies that I want to get stuck with just to obtain my CDL, but I have found a school in the upper part of the state called Greenville Technical College. From what I have read about this school and others is that this particular school is the cheapest and best around here. Actually highly recommended. Out of all the schools and companies that I have called about, this school and Con-Way are the only ones that have returned my calls but havent tried to "sell" themselves. Thats always a good sign imo. Anyways, I'm signing up with this school and plan on starting on March 5 of 2012.

I am wanting to get a few more ideas and advise on this school in the meantime and I also want to get some ideas on housing while I'm in school (9 Weeks). As I mentioned earlier, I have kids and I am married, so I am not wanting to uproot the family and move upstate just for 2 months. My main question regarding housing is, is there housing available in the area that I can qualify for? Are there hotels that offer discounted rates for students? I talked an instructor up there and he did not know of any besides the ones for students that are in school fulltime. Can anyone give me some advise on how to handle this? I really dont want to yank the kids out of school in the middle of the school year just to move up there for 2 months or permantly. I do not want to spend the gas money to go back and forth except for maybe the weekends. Has anyone gone through this and have any advise or know of any funded programs that could help me out?

Thank you in advance for any ideas or advise that you have.

BTW, I posted this same exact post somewhere else on here, not sure where, before I got an automatic response telling to introduce myself here.

First, Welcome to TTR, second, I do not know of any in the area atm, you might find something like microtel where they have weekly rates, some hotels do give cdl discounts. might google the town and check it out via google maps. Hope that might help.

Thanks ya'll...I'm going to start calling around to the hotels and see if they offer discounts..I hope they do.

Got any ideas on a good company to get with around this area once I finish school?? They say several companies will call or come by, but it'll probably be the usual suspects like swift, etc..

First let me say that if you do pursue a job in the trucking industry. You have in my opinion chosen an honorable profession. But for some one just starting out you will have some dues to pay.It is a demanding job.Probally your best opprotunity to get your feet wet so to speak will be OTR.Not many local jobs for a rookie. And if you do go over the road it will be difficult on you and your family.Sounds like I'm trying to talk you out of it?Not at all just go into it with your eyes open.Been doing it for 39 years raised a family but I have a wonderful supportive wife.Good Luck to you.

    ForrestGump and WatsonDL1 Thank this.

Another question...Is Greenville Tech a school that can give their own CDL test..(3rd party)? Or will I have to pay for my own testing once I complete the school?

I just thought about this and nobody is answering the phone this morning..

    ForrestGump,
Tri-County Tech is a very good trucking school...They have no more than 3 students in a truck at one time. If you are having problems they will put you in a truck with a trainer one on one for a day or so if needed. They will do anything the can to make sure you are well trained and you get you CDL. Also, Tri-County trains some of testers for DMV around the state. Tri-County has also, been ask by some of the other schools in the state to come in and help set up thier trucking school. At Tri-County the 1st time you test the price is included in what you paid for school. If you don't pass the 1st time they can also give you a 3rd party test the 2nd time so you don't have to pay.

No, I don't work for Tri-county I went through the CDL progarm at Tri-County.

Which ever school you go to make sure you attend one that is an accepted school for most trucking companies. You don't wanna go thru school to find out the trucking company you wanna work for doesn't recognize the school you attended. wherever you go to work stay atleast 1 year. good luck and MERRY CHRISTMAS!
