I don't do the company per diem, I do a itemizing deduction for per diem on my returns but with elogs and not logbooks how do you keep your records of overnights.

Since they say keep your log books for up to 3 years after you file return. The company im with runs e-logs.

My question is if you have to show proof of overnights from log book what would you do since everything is on electronic log now?

    Hope that makes sense, Thanks.

With Schneider we can print off our log books, for quick reference i keep a daily planner and record everyday where i start the day and where i shut down. for each month i put a note of how many days i was otr that month and at end of year do a quick tally. I would think with your e-logs you should be able to print them also. Good luck and MERRY CHRISTMAS

One of the requirements is that you should be able to print a hard copy of your logs. Granted the printers may not work, but can you take a picture of the logs with your phone/camera and E-mail them to yourself?

A log book is not required for the per diem on the taxes.

Like stated elsewhere, you can use a daily planner, journal or whatever that lists the location of each day.

We don't have a option to print ours. Only option we have is we can fax them. Ill have to start doing something like that so i can reference back where i was. I use to just go thru that months logs when i went home each home and tallied up how many days where otr. I do the same thing so when the end of year gets here, I just have to add everything up real quick.

I would have to get them faxed and then printed. We don't have printers or that option. I didn't think of taking pictures. Thanks for that idea.

I was just looking at ways to have proof that was otr/overnight incase it ever comes up if the governement wants to know. Most likely wont ever happen though.

contact your company the way you will print them is to go to a website when home and enter a password and such and then print them. You wont be able to print them from the truck. Merry Christmas

I just started with elogs and I am using the day planner idea to keep track of nights out. My company gives you an entire years worth of elogs on one computer disk so if I AM ever audited I do have access to the elogs to print off.

if you don't have proof (log book/elog print out) try showing the irs a day planned and see what happens to your per diem write off :biggrin_2554:
