I'm 27, been driving almost 4 years OTR. I'm single and have no ties anywhere just friends everywhere. I live on the road. My only bill is my cell phone and some entertainment. I make .43 cpm and average 2500-3000 mpw which is cake to me. This job couldn't be easier and the lifestyle couldn't be better.
I think I would like to try and start owner operating. My question is, will I make money? I know it will be hard at first but I need the challenge. I never lose when I challenge myself. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT!!!
Ready to buy a truck.. Should I??

Search the Owner op section on here and you will find everything you need to know. Also talk to a few of the guys that started from nothing and seem to be doing great like Redforman. Good luck.

I just recently started with my own truck. I am leased on to a company, but I am fully responsible for my business. I make a little less money but I love that I am in my own truck and make my own choices.
volvodriver01 and jinx26 Thank this. -
Go for it.
BigBadBill, jinx26, SHC and 1 other person Thank this. -
Go for it! With only one bill to pay each month the bankruptcy hearing in 12 months will be easy!

I say that cause it sounds like his heart is in it unlike a lot of people in here expecting to get rich quick and easy. Already a step ahead, now he just needs a paid for starter truck. f he doesn't have the cash for that right now then he's got plenty of time to save it while sifting through info here. With very few obligations he could pile up $25 or $30 k in a years time. Back when I was a company driver in his shoes I was banking $500 minimum every week and did that for years. I had no life there for a while but I could pay cash for anything I wanted.
rocknsand, volvodriver01 and BigBadBill Thank this. -
If it's in you to do it and don't mind giving up the stability of a company check i say go for it. But stay away from a lease purchase. Good Luck and Merry Christmas!!!

I would consider staying a company driver until you can afford to buy a truck outright. Then save some additional cash about $10k for repairs like tires, engines and transmissions which always seem to bankrupt todays O/O. Once you accomplish that you can see exactly what your risk is.

Start running your truck like you own it. Keep track of all expenses and revenue to the truck like it was yours. You may have to estimate some of this but it will give you the experience of tracking and logging these things. The shippers just may give you what the load is paying if you tell them why you want it.
And when you do make the big jump, don't go in mortgaged up to your butt. Thats a sure recipe for failure. Like Coal said, sock away that cash till you can buy a truck outright. That way "Mr Stress" is never knocking on your door.SHC, BigBadBill and volvodriver01 Thank this. -
I wouldn't say Mr Stress will never knock on your door but when he does he'll look more like "mini-me" instead of Hulk Hogan
BigBadBill and volvodriver01 Thank this.
