Nice pictures & stories. I worked for both Monfort and Steinbecker Bros. I started with Monfort Transportation in June 1976 just after Monfort Corp removed management of the trucks from DSCO (a Shupe Bros, Inc Company). I was in the Safety Dept. Larry & Dale Steinbecker had 6 KWs leased to Monfort Trans at that time. The trucks were painted in the same colors as the Monfort owned trucks. All owner operators were required to paint their trucks in the Monfort colors at that time. Larry & Dale added several trucks over the next few years & grew to about 18 at Monfort. In 1978, they were allowed to adopt a slightly different color scheme. It was a lighter yellow, brown & white. By 1979, they had grown to 25 tractors, still all KWs. In Feb of that year the brothers offered me a position in their growing company & I accepted. In 1980, they added 25 Freightliners to their fleet still all running Monfort authority. The Freightliners were actually owned by a leasing company in which Kenny Monfort was a principal. In 1981 just after "deregulation" in the trucking industry occurred, Larry & Dale chose to get their own operating authority. They turned the 25 Freightliners back to the leasing company & secured their own trailers and began hauling for IBP. Things were a bit of a challange that first year. Larry & Dale both drove on occassion to help with the need for drivers we faced at first. There were many folks who were part of the Steinbecker operation over the years. At one time the new KWs that were added were solid brown. Then in 1984, the new trucks were orange T600s. The company continued to grow at fast pace (one of the reasons it did not last. By 1986, there were about 150 company trucks and about the same number of owner operators (individuals & fleets). We had terminals in Lyndhurst, NJ Atlanta, GA Fontana, CA & Topeka, KS. We ran a few dry vans as well as reefers. They made an advertising tape in 1986 to used in an add campaign they were planning to do.(I have a copy of that tape.) Unfortunately, financial issues caught up & the brothers divided the company in early 1987. It soon failed there after. The equipment that had been financed through the old Drivers Service Company (DSCO)was taken over by DSCO & leased back to Monfort Transportation in Dec 1987. It was sure fun while it lasted. The DSCO story is for another time.
