I'm looking into getting a job in the Parcel division so I can work my way up to a feeder position and was told to go to the largest nearby hub for the most advancement opportunity. So...does anyone know where the largest feeder hub is in Louisville, Kentucky? I've tried calling both the main UPS number at 800-742-5877 and they referred me to UPS Careers (which I've already been to and the site doesn't answer my main question) and then they referred me to Freight at 800-333-7400 (even though I told them I wasn't looking for the Freight hubs). The folks at Freight didn't seem to know either and they just referred me back to the first number. I then called around a bit more with no luck. So far, no one I've called in UPS seems to know the answer. Are there any drivers here who know?

Check the site WWW.UPSJOBS.COM You want to apply for tractor trailer driver. AKA Feeder. If its open. You Probably just missed out. You will be hired as seasonal first then they might hire you full time. Seasonals get $20 an hour plus OT. Your oncall 24/7. Hope you dont like having a home life. Even when your out of hours they will call you into yard jockey or "shift". Yes it is the biggest feeder hub. Its feast or famine over there. Top pay is $33 an hour at your 3 year mark. No benefits while your seasonal. But you do pay union dues for nothing. The lady in charge of hiring is named Carmen. Her numbr is 502-359-1801. Do not trust the spervisors over there. Especially the main boss. Watch your back. There are plenty of people who will stab you in your back, because its sink or swim. If your gone someone else has a better chance to get on full time. We have 2 big hubs here in Louisvillle. The number to dispatch at the airport is 502-359-1531, or 502-359-0998. Hope that helps and good luck.

    Wow! Thanks a million!

    Questions:
    1. What is it like to be a yard jockey?
    2. How many hours is usual per week (including the hours they call you in for)?
    3. What do you mean by "If you're gone"?
    4. What is the actual name of the number one biggest hub as well as the number two biggest hub?

Thanks! My plan is to get ready (get everything in order to make them want me) and then send them a letter every couple of months or so with my resume and cover letter. Will also write down those numbers and names for sure.

. You don't need a resume. Just do the application on upsjobs.com. they don't want all that junk. They wont look at it.
    2. Being a yard jockey.....well at ups its a shifter. You will pull about 30-45 trailers off the door during the sort. That happens twice a day. Then you'll get a meal break. Then you will hook 10-12 sets and bring them up front for the drivers. Mostly sleeper teams. That's at the airport. Ashbottom hub.the other hub is Lch. Its all city pickup and regional. Sleeper teams run outta the airport. You will go from mileage to hourly as soon as you hit your destination.
    3. If your gone....I mean fired laid off. Terminated. No lo G
    er with ups.
.82 a mile over a 250 mile radius one way. You will run Chicago and return same day. Or St.Louis Knoxville, Columbus, west Virginia. Stuff like that.

Boonie it will be good for you to start as a shifter, I know some feeder drivers whom started out as shifters. Being a shifter also prove that you can do the job of a feeder driver, you will be back trailers like a master, or maybe even backing a 28" with a dolly attach to in no time.

Can a person just graduate from CDL school and go right in and be hired for that off the street?

That airport hub is huge boonie. Not sure if its the biggest one, havent been to any of the others down there. But I swear they have atleast 40 jockey trucks. The whole #### place is jockey trucks. Security and safety are huge down there. Cant go 50 feet without hitting a stop sign. Come to a complete stop, honk, and then go...Its a pain in the ### but when youre paid by the hour, who cares?

LOL! That's the right attitude! Can't wait to hear more about your experiences. Anyway, what's a jockey truck?

By the way, I kept calling around and finally found a warm body to answer the phone. That warm body couldn't answer my questions either. However, a supervisor finally got on the phone and did tell me that the Air Hub was the largest Parcel terminal in Louisville and the second largest is on Bluegrass Parkway.

On another note, have been riding around in the UPS package car, hustling, and helping the driver...It sure would be nice if UPS would allow their TT drivers to have helpers. That would be great and it would shed some light on a few things. At least I get to hear the diesel engine of the package car. Trying not to sound too corny here, but I just love the sound of a diesel engine and have for years, but just didn't put two and two together. Saw a couple flatbeds yesterday, each carrying crane parts and thought it was so cool. Hubby doesn't get my fascination, lol! (He's driven TTs in a yard before years ago when he was running construction). I just tell him I think it's cool as hell.

A jockey truck is a truck designed specifically for moving trailers around the yard, or very short distances.

You can hook up to, and unhook from trailers without ever getting out of the truck (except to stand on the catwalk to hook/unhook the air lines).

The 5th wheel of a jockey truck is mounted on a hydraulic platform, operated by a lever inside the cab, so you never have to get out and manually raise the landing gear of the trailer.
