Last night, a Prime driver got lost. That's not really a big deal, it happens to the best of us. He found himself inside the Troutdale, OR Swift terminal. Heh.... yeah, it gets better. You actually have to make a concerted effort to enter this yard. It's a left turn off a road that backs the little airport. You can't miss all the Swift signage as you come in. Then, there are all the Swift wagons parked neatly (honest!) in their respective slots.

Well, anyway, this guy came into the yard and turned around. No biggie. It's a safe place (really!) to do this. We have a one way entrance with tire shredders across the driveway and an exit gate with an arm that is raised to let trucks out. The idea is, you stop before the arm, the guy inside the office asks for your truck number and driver code, checks the computer to see whether you are authorized to remove the vehicle from the yard, then raises the gate arm. Even people who are lost get to engage in this discourse with our office guy.

Not our hero. He tried to go between the end of the arm and the center gate post. He didn't scrape the gate post, but he did catch the end of the arm on his trailer and break the end of it off. Apparently, he didn't want to talk to the office guy. Maybe he thought he would get in trouble for turning around in here (he wouldn't) or some of Swift's white paint would magically transfer itself to his Prime truck if he spent too much time in our yard.

But, he drove off into the night without so much as looking to see whether Prime's trailer was damaged on the gate arm. So, when I walked into the office after all of this, my office guy told me he was wondering whether I had returned to Prime.

I suspect Swift may have a new applicant when Don Lacy gets Swift's report about this on his desk. He tends to look rather narrowly on hit and runs, regardless of how minor they are. Of course, with a preventable like this on his record, that Prime driver doesn't have a prayer of being hired at Swift. Just sayin.

    Be safe, y'all!

(PS: Is Don Lacy even still there?)

Yeah not good at all. I wonder what was going threw his head to try and run that gate. Anyone at the terminal would understand he was lost and turning around. If i was in his spot I would have intentinally used the swift yard to turn around if needbe. I know they have tons of camera's on those gates so he is toast.

Is he worse than the swift driver that got stuck a 1 ton boulder under his tandems dragged it to the highway managed to back out of it and left it in the middle of the road? Is that a hit n run on the boulder or destruction of private property?

I think Swift Prime Werner JB Hunt and CR England should have a truck rodeo every year. The rodeo will consist of an obstacle course with different hazards (fences, boulders, curbs, ditches etc.) and whoever does the most damage wins.

When talking about accidents, or bad decisions, it doesn't matter what company it is. Every company has morons driving for them. Its' the guys driving those old beat up trucks under there own authority that scare me the most out here. They are usually the worst.
