The GPS is nice to confirm what you already mapped out and give you a heads up on upcoming streets you have to turn on. Plus its nice to have that ETA there in the corner. There are times when you are glad you have it.

I love my GPS (RM510) but I always check my route by my dispatched route suggestions, fuel stops, and customer directions. Generally I can make the GPS match all three. I, also like the ETA and miles to go feature of the GPS. Really comes in handy when coming up on a huge traffic backup and needing to find a quick detour.

I like my GPS about 90% of the time. I wouldn't be able to complete my route on time if I had to pre-plan every stop I make in a day. Most of the time, receivers will know if GPS will bring you in. When I drove OTR, most days my only stops were truck stops and rest areas. My current job, I usually have between 3-6 drops a day and have to cover 500 miles and up and deliver during business hours. My atlas doesn't get used near as much as it used to.

Trouble is the maps now a days are getting such small print, due to many streets trying to be around a city, I would get my pre plan, put it in my GPS, then look at the Atlas and compare to what its saying, also helps to find the place on the map...
With a RM its generally close....Always double check, save your time troubles and time

If GPS crashes (sunspots, space debris- or- who knows what) NooB's can't go ANYWHERE. drivers that live a short distance from home can't get home or to work because they're used to talking on the phones or texting while the navigation unit says "TURN RIGHT HERE". "TURN LEFT HERE".

Imagine- drivers of all nine classes of vehicles completely lost- drivers who have never noticed a road sign in their life- drivers who have never cared or known what a street sign was actually for- who have never driven from point A to B without an electronic gadget guiding them- lost, confused, scared... can you imagine the gridlock?

I never thought about this until a young driver asked me to help him use a payphone in a truckstop. He had never used one- didn't know what a dialtone was, and didn't understand how to use it.

Turn off GPS for a day and you switch off big Brother. A whole generation of human beings will be left to think for themselves and for the first time in their lives will have to put phones down and actually read instructions from traffic signs while driving.

I'm betting that's the day a lot of people realize that the letters and numbers on all those signs actually do something.

"Like OMG, like, did you see that? The name on that sign is just like the name of our street! Like, how long has that been there?"
